Gotta tell you...nike dunks were the best skate shoe of my life...I stand a bit turned out but they wear very well and have good cushioning and grip

Only thing about Nikes is that I have wide feet and they are not wide shoes.

Vans generally run wider, they're great shoes. I'm still wearing a pair of XL2s after 7 years (I skate causally too).

Stay away from DC!! Terrible shoes.. they will fall apart after a month of skating, I don't know if it's the material or the designs they use but they will not last.

Emericas are nice too.

Not to flame or poke at you, but why do you care so much about your shoes? IMO skating is waaaaaay more than a fad than it is "sport". I don't skate, its hard as ****. but I get ridiculed by so-called "s8terz" because I wear Vans shoes and don't skate. I like the music stereotypical "skaters" like, I just don't skate.

Just my two cents

When I was more into skating, all I wore were Globes. Now days, Vans.

It's a bit of both, more functionality than fashion actually! there most certainly is a difference in the type of shoe you skate with. You wouldn't know until you actually skateboarded for a few years.

As for getting back on subject Nikes are what I use but given your circumstances I'd go with Emerica or Fallen if you can find em.

Have skated since Bush SR was in office, but I second this.
