You think the job market has gotten bad?

Here is a little something just to point out what an employers market it is.

Waffle House is now doing background checks, and will no longer hire felons.

I never would have imagined that things had gotten so bad out there that the WH would be in position to pick and choose.

Yeah, hell they are going door to door.....

I am not a felon, but I dunno if you have WH there. Traditionally if you wanted to see the dregs of society and feel good about yourself that was where you went......

Not up here... Waffle House is considered one of the finer family restaurants here in the Lehigh Valley.

I, myself, would be shocked to discover that anyone with a less than impeccably stellar background would be hired to work at Waffle House.

Around here, they want background checks on everyone. There are two pretty simple reasons behind such investigations; It is cheaper to do than not to do. Insurance companies provide significant rate breaks for those insureds who only hire vetted individuals. Lawsuits are NOT cheap. It also saves money in petty theft and so on.

With job opportunities drying up for ex-felons, that pretty much leave only the military as a career choice for such fellows.

Not the Army National Guard, not anymore. Last year you could get in with a medical waiver, prior felonies waiver, and even prior drug abuse waiver. Now our enlistment restrictions are the highest out of the active duty Army and Army Reserves - no waivers at all and Class 3A (50 or higher on a 0-99 scale) on the ASVAB.

A lot of my clients have been getting pretty generous waivers to join the Army. Waivers do not seem to be as easy to get in either the Navy/Marines, nor National Guard.

The latter seems odd to me as, at least around here, our National Guard units are spending most of their man hours in Iraq these days.

Anyway,

I would have thought being a felon was a requirement to work at the Waffle.

I used to go to one when I worked nightshift that had the Keystone Light bitter beerface guy working there.

Every Waffle House I've been to has the standard 'old sassy waitress', and the rest of the people were just laid back and nice.

Albeit, scarred 'most relaxed guy in the holding cell' nice, but still generally pleasant.

Because we were just too good at recruiting when it was becoming obvious that we needed to supplement the Active Duty and Reserve troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We lowered the recruiting standards back in '04 (I think, been a while) and got a huge flood of warm bodies in, and what scrapings from the bottom of the barrel we got, too. So this past fiscal year, the government cuts back on our budget, we can't afford to keep all the people in the Guard that we've got, and each State is encouraged to get rid of their problem children (where before we were encouraged to retain them to improve numbers) and also everyone tightens the belt on recruiting. It's the Reactionary Rollercoaster, with each new cycle fixing the problems of the last cycle, but never levelling out to "just right".
