no man, sand-blast it. I used to do sand blasted signs pretty regularly - they leave that cool raised harder grain pattern. little more character than lasers.

I used to have a wood burning kit somewhere, been LONG time since I've played around with that. Wonder if I could con my aunt into doing it? She used to do incredible woodcarvings for fun. I'll check if you want me to Matt, just let me know.

when I was little my parents made snowshoes for a living - they had a custom brass brand made to stamp the front cross support with their logo.

It basically just attached to a big-*** soldering iron. quick 5 second stamp gave a really nice, clear brand in wood. and heck - it was made of brass.....
