So now excuse me if this sounds dumb, but are these iron on, or must I employ the boss woman to sow'em on?

They are old fashioned needle and thread.

The slick back is that way to keep it from de-threading.

Here's a tip to make placing them easier. Get some 'stitch witch' from your local sewing supply store. When I was in the service I used it to place the patches on my uniforms so my mother-in-law could sew them in place.

It will keep the patch in place so you can just sew it on without worrying about it shifting. It's really handy stuff.

Thanks guys. I actually tryed the hot iron, and they're stuck on pretty good. I will use some needle and thread for extra assurance.

I used industrial strength stick on velcro. Holds great so far and I can use my patches on multiple pieces of clothing

Yeah the wife tried the iron too and found out they melt to fabric pretty good if you hold the iron on long enough. But she didn't ruin them, still look good and she's sewing them on for extra protection.
