Carter Machine Mini Comp-First Impressions

Let me start off in saying that I have been waiting to write this review for several weeks while waiting for this gun. During that time Lauren from carter machine was very accommodating with all of my questions and the order process. She called me on my cell phone and when I called her back with a change to my order she was getting into her car. She still turned around unlocked the door, turned on the computer and changed my order.

Options on the gun
Base Price $500
Polished Finish $25
Polished Clear Barrel $10
Both Inserts $38 (Earons barrel kit NOT sanchez machine kit they are similar however I was misinformed in my research, .689 and .686 inserts) Oh ya, its cocker threaded
Total Shipped cost $591

So anyways on to the gun.
Here is a picture to compare sizes with my buzzard

Some more Beauty Shots

The anno has a very nice "blood red" color however I have found a couple little flaws. On the pump handle and threading of the twelve gram changer, the thread I expected the pump handle I did not, however not a huge deal for me, really is barely noticable.

The trigger is a very smooth slider with a clean, soft break.

In comparison to my Buzzard it is a bit lighter and has a slightly smoother pump stroke. Probably the smoothest pump stroke I have ever felt. This is due in part to the dual under body pump arms.

I aired up the gun tonight and shot it in my friend’s basement. It has the same ball on ball accuracy of my buzzard and got 49….yes 49 shots off a twelve gram above 265 fps.
The Chrono read as follows for the first 15 shots
281, 281, 280, 280, 280, 280, 280, 279, 278, 279, 278, 277, 278, 279, 279
After the 40th shot my velocity was 273, 45th shot 271, 46th 269, 48th 266, 49th 265. After that it dropped off quickly.

Temperature was around 80 degrees, shots were about 25 seconds apart, and the paint to bore match was dead on, essentially ideal conditions

SO it does pretty good on 12ies and is meh kinda consistient.

The humpback frame has a great feel in the hands and the marker feels like an extension of your shooting hand. The ball drop is very quick and doesnt require much tilt forward. So far I'm in love.

The Tear Down
While I was taking my gun apart I kept saying to myself “gee this is pretty easy”. You don’t have to try and squeeze the valve and snub together, it still requires a pair of Allen wrenches, (Don’t know the sizes, I just have a bag of them, I’ll find someone with a labeled set), but it comes apart smoothly with no surprises.

I added some pictures of the barrel and insert for those interested; it’s a very slick barrel, about 11.5 inches in length with the traditional spiral porting. It’s also auto cocker threaded! For those not familiar with Earon's barrel kits the inserts are about 5 inches long and thread into the barrel. The inserts are still beveled like traditional Carter's guns and thread in smoothly. Some smaller bore inserts would be nice and Earon's new barrel kit coming out sometime this spring with have smaller control bores (1.5") and come in .683 as well as .686 and .689.

The marker has only a few screws to take apart, first being the screw for the feed, which is threaded into a raised metal insert that is threaded into the body and fits into an indent in the feed. The feed stays in place quite securely with this arrangement.

Next there is three screws on the underside of the gun holding the valve and snub to the rail and grip frame, and a fourth on the inside of the rail attaching the rear of the grip frame.

The valve is the first piece to slide off being attached by the single rear exterior screw

After removing the exterior and interior grip frame screws it comes off from the rail, here is are two pictures showing the top of the trigger frame and sliding trigger assembly as well as the interior trigger frame screw

One more exterior screw and the body detaches from the rail, you can now remove the pump and slide the internals out.

Here is a picture of the rail and body seperated

Here are the guides for the pump arms

The Hammer and bolt

All the parts Together

That’s basically it, very simple IMHO and very easy to do, while it does not have thumb screws like a phantom I find it easier to take apart and put back together as you don’t have to hold anything together with any force during assembly or disassembly. The pump arms are much easier to connect to the bolt.

To sum it up in a similar manner to what Trojan man said on scp, The gun takes the great things about a phantom (light weight, bolt together easy assembly, ease of maintenance and use) and everything that was great about the Comp (super smooth pump stroke and trigger, elegant looks, great gas mileage) added cocker threading and wrapped it up into one kick *** gun.

All right, I finally have some pictures for my in game section of the review.

Having played with the Mini Comp several times now I am just more and more in love with the gun. I purchased a 12" dye single piece stainless barrel for it due to my preferance for a heavy muzzle. Right now it has nail polish wedgits but It will be getting sent to palmers for the real thing this summer.

The gun points very naturally and has a great feel to it.

Overall my in game gas effiency has been great. Since we are playing with reballs on our small indoor course I am shooting 230ish and getting at least 50 shots a 12 gram. It really shoots far down into the 12 gram with only the last two shots being unusable.

My fast quick peeking coupled with the inability of some of the club members to hit me has led to a new nickname that I think is going to stick.....Ben "Waka" Moll (never has the mispronunciation of my last name sounded so good)

Carter Machine Mini Comp: $600
Indoor Speedball field: $2500
Pumpker'ing the club pres with a stock class gun: Priceless

so you didn't get choose the extra milling option?

seeing the milling on the rear of the body on yours i thought you chose that option as well.
