No offense taken, setting up a game is not rocket science. And yes it does matter what I make and who I know, its called money and networks two important factors in any business or event. Yeah this thread is going off the reservation but it was "BLC_Misfire" who challenged what I had said earlier about doing a better event then Red Mars. So read back through the thread and you will see the relevance of what I said earlier.

That is all well and good however this thread is specifically intended to review the RedMars game. If it keeps meandering off topic in such a manner...I.E. the near flaming and personal attacks between the thread participants I will be forced to close the thread. I would really rather not do that.

If you wish to start a thread discussing what it takes to run a Scenario please by all means feel free. This goes for every one involved in the little off tangent squabble (My self included). No game is perfect. If some one feels they have an idea or the resources to do better and wishes to talk about it well its a big forum and the scenario section here could defiantly use some more threads. (hint hint =P ) Lets try and keep the threads we have more or less on topic and free of any drama. =)

Hrm..I'll definintely keep that in mind and just fill up at Dynamic before hand next time. I need to remember to bring more 12 grams too since they weren't selling any on site that I saw, I brought just barely enough but then my Stroker started giving me crap and I burned about half of them teching it before I could chrono.

True, they don't 'do 12 grams' from what I've seen, and I always bring my own. I've gotten a 3 1/2 oz tank though and anytime that I'd be using a vert 12 gram, I'd use that instead.

Been watching this thread...

Ive been watching this thread since it started after the RED MARS game.
I see two side going back and forth but what I dont understand is what Capt. G0DZILLA did wrong in his report.

Lets face it, the guy just made his case and although many of you think he has somehow disrespected Jim, Im just not seeing it. What should he have done differently? IMO he gave Jim equal time here posting BOTH letters and I think its pretty clear that Jim attacked him for making the gripe in the first place, and thats wrong. I went to Red Mars and I can say that all of Capt. G's issues are valid and pretty straight forward. No, he did not submit a review but he is posting his experience post game and leaving it up to us to decide.

But reading down through the thread it would seem he has stepped into a hornet's nest with you guys. Maybe you are all Jim's friends or something but Capt. G is just getting kicked around by everyone and nobody is actually contesting his claims in his letter. The truth is, we can't contest anything he said because we all know what the truth is. Maybe the truth hurts or maybe none of us want to admit to being shafted but Red Mars was a huge let down.

Everything from the field to the services and the overall game was weak, and for Jim to say he didnt make money is a load of .
I did some basic math, and Im not that great at math but the admission probably pulled in about 21,500.00 (430 players x 50.00 Ave.= 21500.00) and paint pulled approximately 55,900.00 gross netting 34,000.00 if Fledgeling bought the paint @ around 25.00 dollars a case. So just the paint sales and the entry pulled in about 55,500.00 but mind you these are conservative figures. I know the walk on fee was like 65.00 and many players bought more then just two cases of paint so throw in another 20,000.00 give or take. Its plain to see that yes, money was made. The kicker is when you consider the condition of the field you know FS probably paid that farmer only 2,000.00 for the whole weekend, the port o johns might have run 100.00 a piece each day and paint ball insurance is surprisingly cheap. The overhead for that operation probably didn't equal even one third of the overall net income.
I talked to a few field owners and they all agree on one thing, NOBODY gets into paintball events unless they plan on making money.

Then Capt. G suggested doing his own production and again gets kicked around by doubting Thomas comments as to why he cant, WTF people?
If that guy thinks he can do better then we should encourage him! These games will never get any better unless people like him try to do it BETTER! Is ignorance bliss or am I getting the idea that no one here really knows how much better it could be. If he knows promoters of large events and has the time, the money and the planning it is entirely possible that he just might clown a production like Red Mars.

So, Im going to step into this hornet's nest here and say Capt. G has the right idea, he made a good case and Jim clearly lost when he wrote the obviously NASTY letter.

BTW I went to my local field and talked to some other players I know and they all said the same stuff and they didnt really like Red Mars either.

The organizers of Red Mars should really think about refunding some money. Not only did the whole thing suck, but it was obviously heavily weighted towards one team and was an absolute fiasco in terms of logistics.

The key areas where they failed miserably are too numerous to mention but a few of them were:

No coordination with local fire authorities to allow for nighttime pyrotechnics
Food and Water was a horrendous mess - hygeine was a health hazard
Field safety would have had the insurance company up in arms
No vendor participation to speak of - no local shops involved
Field layout was pathetic - these guys don't have a clue
Only 2 weapons available for pistol match - c'mon - you know backups are a must-have
Attitude - the organizers must really be in love with themselves - @ssholes!
Scenario? What scenario - this was glorified rec-ball, but boring and frustrating.

All in all I would have to say that this was a ton of anticipation just to be let down because some d*uchebags didn't do their homework or have enough brain cells to figure out how to do what they were trying to do.

Advice to event producers: Next time you want to feel important and waste everyone's time perhaps you should throw a sh*tty concert or bridal expo. Wasting everyone's time, money and energy is not only an @sshole thing to do, it's also bad for the sport, the local shops and the players. You should be ashamed of yourself. I hope you cry yourself to sleep in the basement of your parent's house where you most likely live.

I would bet the ranch there won't be another Red Mars. I just hope this fiasco doesn't turn too many people away from the sport or keep real event promoters from doing a real scenario game.
wow, you can sit there and rant but what good is it doing? I for one had a blast at red mars and i was on the red side. I'll admit the wind sucked but there was nothing they could do about it. I don't really see how their Attitude was a problem, if i had a question or if i saw something on the feild i let them know about it. The ref issue was a problem, but it was their first scenario to reff. You came their to play paintball not buy stuff from venders, i'll admit that it can be a advantage for them being there but you didnt come to the event for them. In my 7 years of playing sceanrio paintball i have been to many events where there were no vendors at all. The funny thing is, if you were at the base with the wind with you then you would have wrote a good reveiw. Also if we the red were more aggressive then we could have had this game. Hopefully you get over yourself and try the more planned game in august. I might be going, not sure yet since its a 12 hour drive for me.

Where's home Bandit? just curious.

It was a 10hr drive from my place in IA. Longer for another teammate from WI, and then there were a couple on the team who took the train.

I got the August email, and unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make this one since I'm already booked on a Vegas trip that weekend. Guess I'll have to wait until next year to give Fledgling another shot. I expect someone else to review it!
