Microsoft Money is FREE
Microsoft discontinued support of it's "Money" software but released an edition that's free to download. Here's the link: Download Money Plus Sunset Deluxe from Official Microsoft Download Center
I've been a Money user since version 2004.
I bought Quicken 2012 & its cash-flow was fundamentally broken; avoid it.
Why would you want this?
Do this when you start:
Suggested Category List
Be careful with "cash" transactions. Don't categorize them as "cash" - tag them as "dining out" if you bought lunch at work or went out for beers or whatever you use the cash for.
If you often take large wads of cash out of ATMs, take notes and enter the spending in Money when you get home.
I'm going to run this for a while in addition to the registry I currently run to try it out.
Thanks for posting this.
If it does anything "wonky" on you, feel free to post up with questions.
Here's how I've customized my button bar for quick access to accounts and reports. (click the "Shortcuts..." button to change them).
I also use the "Budget" and "Bills" tabs but since they're tabs, haven't added them to the button bar.
I've used www.mint.com for this kind of thing in the past.
The program told me it wanted to connect to LiveID (MSN/Hotmail) but won't actually do it. Is this because of the discontinued service now that it's free do you know?
LOL I Gotta go back and work some more on it tonight. I imported the transactions from my bank last night. I apparently miss-read the dates and now it wants me to categorize what looks like all my checking account transactions for the last oh 15 years I've had that account.
Note to self... Stay away from this program when tired.
Yeah, shut off the Windows Live ID thing; just set it up with a local password. I'll edit my first post to make mention of that.
I've make some real boners with the program before that resulted in a lot of clean-up.
If you set it up to keep a couple of weeks of backup files, it helps in tracking down problems. (clean data files)
EDIT - just made a massive edit to post #1 to help folks when starting out. (settings, categories etc)
Okay, you have me interested. Just downloaded it. I've seen other kids in my classes using Mint and wanted to try it, but I like the appeal of local software compared to Mint being online.
I might take a look at this. I currently use outright.com..
Thanks. This will serve me well.
