More from The Hold Steady, this is in "Hot Soft Light," in which the narrator is in a police interrogation:

"So this is it, this is the end of the session
I ain't gonna be takin' any more questions
and I think my attorney's gonna second that motion."

And also, referencing the narrator's drug use:

"It started recreational,
and then it got medical,
and it came up hot and soft,
and then it tightened up its tentacles"

Related theme from a different song, same band, called "Chips Ahoy":

"Some nights the painkillers make the pain even worse"

They write some killer lyrics.

Guns and Roses " Used to love her" always makes me chuckle

I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain
..........
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard

I also like Pink Floyd's "Learing to Fly" ( co-written by Tom Petty),

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything

Another nod to The Hold Steady: "Hot Soft Light" from the album Boys and Girls in America.

The song is sung from the perspective of an individual in a police interview:

"I was not involved at the northtown mall.
As a matter of fact i didnt even know that's where it happened."

The song goes on to discuss the drug use of the individuals in question:

"We started recreational.
It ended kinda medical.
It came on hot and soft and then
It tightened up its tentacles."

And at some point he just calls off the interview:

"So this is it.
This is the end of the session.
I ain't gonna be taking any more questions.
I think my attorney's gonna second that notion."

That album and another, Separation Sunday, are full of great wordplay, references to other songs/artists, historical and biblical references, and references to themselves. Really pretty great all around.

One more example, just one line from "Charlemagne in Sweatpants" from Separation Sunday:
"Tramps like us, and we like tramps..."

A reference to "Born to Run," but turning the meaning around with the second half of the line.

AKA Fan
Perfect Day by Lou Reed.

"...Just a perfect day
you made me forget myself
I thought I was
someone else, someone good

Oh, it's such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on..."

I work with the terminally ill and dying as a Hospice nurse, and I can't help but think of this song daily.

They'll see the barrel of my gun before they ever see me hang.

Guess she must have realy sinned

I guess we're all just soldiers
She was only six years old
Left to die by strangers
Her family waits
And if we're all just soldiers
Is it so wrong to be afraid

Phoebe lost the war today
There must be some mistake
Say it happens all the time
And it's said and done
Little Miss 15 65 Your soul remains unclaimed
Guess you must have realy sinned

Morality won't help her
When she lies silent in a morgue
And all our sorrows left her
But the morning headlines
Even say that it's a shame
What are we headin' for

Seen it all before
Silent on the ground
As he's walking away
And I wonder how many more
Everybody take it
Like its nothing at all

I have had lyrics from a different song on that same album in my sig for a long time....This ones not so popular and they even removed it from all recent releases of the album due to it "not fitting" with their views anymore.

Another Offspring song that I love the lyrics to is All I Want

Okay
Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya

Day after day your home life's a wreck
The powers that be just breathe down your neck
You get no respect, you get no relief
You gotta speak up and yell out your piece

So back off your rules, back off your jive
'Cause I'm sick of not living to stay alive
Leave me alone, I'm not asking a lot
I just don't want to be controlled
That's all I want, that's all I want
That's all I want, that's all I want

Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya

How many times is it gonna take
Till someone around you hears what you say
You've tried being cool, you feel like a lie
You've played by their rules, now it's their turn to try

So back off your rules, back off your jive
'Cause I'm sick of not living to stay alive
Leave me alone, I'm not asking a lot
I just don't want to be controlled
That's all I want, that's all I want
That's all I want, that's all I want

I said it before
I'll say it again
If you could just listen
Then it might make sense

So back off your rules, back off your jive
'Cause I'm sick of not living to stay alive
Leave me alone, I'm not asking a lot
I just don't want to be controlled
That's all I want, that's all I want
That's all I want

Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya
