I usually just play in cleats with my thicker workboot socks that go up about shin height, works good and the extra height keeps the poision ivy from scraping against my ankle just under the pant leg.

Though prefer vibrams when it's dry outside.

I use black, Nike Dry-Fit socks. bought 3 pair 5 years ago, and they still work great (even replaced my black dress socks with them, they don't slide down like dress socks).

I've always loved shooting people out on the ankles when they wear white socks. It's like a neon sign to me against their camoflage...

Adidas soccer socks. Nice and tight but not hot. Breath well and have good toe and heal support
