wow, i can't believe all this talk of not lock tighting a tank, makes me feel real safe when I go to a paintball field. Loctite can plug the relief holes if you put to much on, but I was instructed at the Paintball Safety Institute to Locktite tanks and to only use it on the first 3 threads, wipe off any excess.

Again I am not the most up to date, but I'd say if you are not a certified airsmith, maybe you should just leave that stuff to the people who are, as killing someone would not be the top on my lists of things i want on my mind.

Loctite is not necessary, and is not used in most industries, that being said, most people with scuba tanks and the like are not 14 year old kids. This is why I think many of the people advocate the use of loctite.

My Hydrotester tells me Red loctite can put too much torque on the threads when taking it out, as you cannot use heat on the tank. They also say that enough Blue stuff will do the same so they don't use any.

Personally I put two drops of blue on, but it is not needed, I just prefer the extra protection.

If you guys are really worried about it, then don't use ASA's I never bother with loctite with my Raptor Rex, and why? It is never subjected to torque that could unscrew it, seriously if safety is the concern that is the way it should be.

I think I'll email the makers of the tanks I'll be taking and see their reccomendations on the matter, then if/when something happens I'll have the email so I won't be held responsable.

Thank you for your help.

It is the maker of your regulator/valve you need to contact, the the tank does not have safety features that locktight interferes with, the regulator/valve does.

Certainly post up if you get a response - my guess is that they don't want to be on record with any end-used work on the tank/reg assembly.

I'm guessing that you'll get the boiler-plate "any service performed by non-approved repair agents will result in a voiding of all guarantees"

"Pretty much instantly"?

I'd like to hear more about this horribly tragic event.

As would I. I think we would of heard more about that, much like the woman who was struck in the head.

I can see a large impact to the chest stopping the heart, but as a community, we would of all heard about this.

Back in the 80's, I remember ordering an anodized tank from TASO along with a new on/off valve. It came unassembled. Being a typically ignorant teenager, I just screwed on the valve as tight as I could get it and brought to my next game. Of course, back then, there was very little if any "certified" anything in the paintball world. My buddy hooked up the tank to fill, filled it and then started unscrewing it. Well, he was unscrewing away when he noticed that the valve was coming out of the tank. A few more turns and that thing would have been a missile! His eyes got as wide as saucers! He tightened it up and I loctited (new verb) it down after it was empty. It took a quite a few games to empty a seven ounce tank back then when you'd fire fewer than 200 rounds a DAY!

So, I really don't know what the answer is but I'd be shocked to learn that Loctite isn't a part of the solution for most valves and tanks.

I was surprised to hear about it too. The only info I have is what this guy told me and he seems to be pretty reliable.

Basically, it was a guy he'd played with before and this time he'd been using the same tank he always had but every time he'd pop out of a bunker, it'd unscrew just a bit. As my source said, he didn't notice until it was too late that the valve was on it's last thread when it popped off and struck a guy standing behind them in the chest. He said they called an ambulance after the guy didn't get up. They showed up and worked on him but he died.

Why this wouldn't have been in the media is anyone's guess. I have no answer for that. My source has been playing for a long time and he didn't mention when it happened. He just said "a while ago".

I was always told not to loctite the threads. Just pay attention to your tank when you're unscrewing it and you'll be fine.
