Like everybody said, buy the necessaries first.
If you really feel the need to buy your own (warning...gun whoring sneaks up quickly)
I say start with a tippmann. 98 or A-5 are good workhorses and rarely ever act up.
Don't buy new, look around for the best deal on one of the forums. You will make good finds for your money.
then get another 300.00, then another, and another...etc you will need it

I'm also new to woodsball. My son has been playing for about three years and I decided it was time for me to get in on the action as well. I'm looking at a Tippmann A5 or a custom 98 but until I decide I'm using my sons starter gun which is a Spyder.

The best gun is the one you feel comfortable using. Go to a local pro-shop or field, and hold (and dry fire or even play with) as many as you can. You have a ton of options and which one is best for you is completely a matter of personal preference. Also, do not listen to what anyone tells you if you go to PBNation, unless they tell you what I just told you. People over there consistently say "this gun is best because I have one" and will try to get you to conform.

I agree. A person doesn't ALWAYS need a slow gun, or a fast gun, or a pump gun. If you can use it EFFECTIVELY and feel comfortable with it, it doesn't matter what it is.

A friend of mine is a somewhat obese person. His primary gun is an old ICD alley cat (SLOW semi). His backup is a PMI-II (pump). Yet somehow it can often take 4 experienced players to keep him in one spot. He uses them well.

Good luck, and welcome!
