~Choosing your Equipment~
 
Hey folks, it's me again, the Walking_Target

Today i'm talking about Equipment choices. Most things are not a huge deal, but can contribute to your game in small but significant ways.

Mask

Fit and comfort are everything! Your mask is more important than any other part of your equipment; If you can't see it, you can't shoot it!

in general most people will tell you to buy the latest, greatest thing from 'X' manufacturer. Most of them *are* pretty good, however, just because it looks good, does not mean it will perform good.

A mask should protect from the top of your brow to the point of your chin, come down to the jaw line and completely cover both of your ears.

flexable materials are currently popular in mask construction, namely the Flex series from JT, the Profiler from VForce and the Vents series. It is up to you to decide what is best for you.

if you wear glasses, keep that in mind, make sure to try the mask on with your glasses on! and make sure that the mask is adequitely ventilated with a thermal lense. this will prevent fogging during play.

expect to pay $50 for a good quality mask, and around $25 for the 'entry' level.


Tanks

This is what powers your paint marker. It really depends on your marker as to which kind of tank you should get, but it all boils down to this.

If you have followed the guide, and own some form of blow back or pump, CO2 is fine, and even desirable.

if you have not and own some form of Electo-Pneumatic, you have to look at High Pressure Air tanks ( HPA or 'N2' tanks)

Generally, a mid size tank will serve any player, although if you shoot more, you will want a bigger tank, and if you shoot very little, you want a smaller tank.

if you have purchased a pistol, or some pumps such as the PGP, Phantom or ect. you will be using 12g CO2 'powerlets' you can find these at most major sports retailers, and no, they cannot be refilled.



Hopper


The hopper feeds the paint into the marker, unless you feel the need to burn money, a VL Revolution or a similar hopper will suit most any player. Avoid hoppers with crystal clear shells, older Evolution II's were notorious for this problem, and stock Halo and Reloader B shells are known for this problem too.

expect to replace the shells on a hopper once every one to two years, more if you play especially frequently.


Harness+Pods

This should be proportional to your shooting, the more you shoot in a game, the more paint you should carry. on average, a '3+2' harness will work for almost any player.

the 3+2 denotes that there are 3 loops with velcro to hold pods, and 2 loops made of elastic to hold pods., stacked in a trapezoidal fashion.


Personal Protection

Gloves are a must, and they have to fit you. 'nuff said.

For guys, wear a cup or a 'man pad'. only a fool would play with his boys hanging in the breeze.

for the ladies, some form of chest protection is usually wanted; i have heard female players suggest heavier clothing all the way to wearing two sports bras with some sort of rigid or semi-rigid material in between. some female players have also suggested that a 'jill' or pad should be used to protect the groin as well.

the same kind of protection is generally suggested for women as men otherwise

good shoes and knee pads (volley ball pads work well for me) are also highly suggested.

I only wear one glove. I'm trying to look like michael jackson :eek: No, I just wear it on my left hand, becaause more often that not its covering my reg, and glove has more of a chance of bounce than bare hand.

Gloves really arn't a must, but finget shots do hurt a lot, and I would recomend them.

Also as a small note on Electro's with N2 vrs Co2, If the Electro is a Electronic Gripframe that is attached to a JABB or simular set up and does not actualy have gas run threw it then Co2 will work fine. Example Most Spyders, Pihranas,and Rebels.

I would add a Camelbak to the list.
It is great when playing senarios, but also for walk-on play. When you are in the dead box at 2pm, standing in the 100 degree sun waiting for the next game, that hit of cool water WILL hit the spot, and help with hydration.

i have another thread planned to take care of the marker types (differentiating electro-pneumatic and electronic blowback), a general upgrades guide (no more 21" barrels!) and perhaps a 'first time to the field' guide

as for a camel back, this is an guide to the absolute essential equipment, you will notice i left out just about anything that isn't required to play safely (after seeing a guy get shot with a 'hot' marker, i consider some form of glove a must)

I must be a fool then!! In the 13 years I have been playing, I have never worn one. I am not saying that there isn't a need and that if I ever get shot there I won't go get one, but I wouldn't say that it is a must. I would put it under optional gear like a neck protector and gloves.

well, i got bunk'd in the twig&giggle berries.... not very fun.

given the damage that can occur to those sensitive organs, i would put it on the list of required equipment before i would put gloves

no, i did get beer though... it only hurts for a few minutes, but it's enough to take the fight out of you for the next round.

Umm, you mention a notorious problem for clear-shelled hoppers, but you don't say what the problem is.
