bore size question

im in the process of buying a barrel, and im not too sure what the deal is with the bore sizes of the barrels. obviously i know what bore size literally means, but my question is, why are there different sizes? right now i have an unmodified a-5 and i play woodsball. what advantages/disadvantages are there for going with a different bore? also, is there one that is kinda universal or standard? thanks.

Well the short of it:
Sizers prevent roll-outs in closed bolt guns (pumps, Cockers, Palmers guns, etc) and they improve air efficiency some buy not allowing air to escape around the ball. The common size for most barrels is a .689.

Different kinds of paint are slightly different sizes, and there are many notions that "overboring" "underboring" and "bore matching" all offer performance benefits. So there are many different barrel sizes.

Frankly, it really doesn't make as much of a difference as everyone will tell you. .689 is the closest to a standard you will get, and will work fine.

For an open bolt gun I would say just grab a .688 or .689 and call it a day.

For a closed bolt gun I would say just grab a .688 or .689 and get wedgits from pps (15 bucks IIRC) and call it a day.

i find .685 is more and more useful these days..
even .685 with wedgits for stupid small annoying paint.

Paintballs are .68 (ish) caliber. This does not mean that each brand of paint or each batch will be the same size.

Some paint rolls right through a .679 Freak insert, some stuff won't fit in a .693 sized one.
The idea behind barrel sizes and kits it to get the barrel that best matches the paint that you usually use.
10 yrs ago, it was generally considered that a .689 barrel was "med" , a 687 "small" and a .691 was large. Now most paint tends to be small and some "super small".

i overbore on open bolt guns and match on closed bolt guns. your best bet would be .689 IMO

I didn't notice this was a-5 specific, on open bolt .689 should be fine!

Untill the day when PB manufacturers start producing a paintball of a specific OD, I will have to check them up to my barrels ID.

bore-matching is more inconsistent (fps) than under- or over-boring. over-boring is less efficient but supposedly breaks less paint.
