Noob question about a Maverick

Just got an ACI maverick, it is chopping like crazy, and if i point the marker towards the ground the ball falls out. i know that there is a spring that goes horizontally across to hold the ball in. has anyone come up with a better idea as far as possibly a different method, such as detents instead of the spring, as a ball kepper?

A little electrical tape or a little dab of fingernail polish at the base of the barrel.

I'm not sure if it will be the right size on the outside, but you may want to drop five bucks for a set of Phantom detent rings. At least in my Phantom, it's great stuff.

The stock detente in the Mav is designed to stop double feeds and chopping. If you removed it thats your problem...your most likely chopping the top ball.

As far as roll-outs are concerned the nail polish trick will cure that. Also just an FYI Phantom detente rings wont do anything to help rollouts on a bore drop stlye nelson as the bolt acutally enters the barrel.

i didnt remove anything. as i stated "there is a spring that runs horizontally. Has anyone come up with a better idea as far as possibly a different method." That might work better. Is the spring the only thing that is supposed to be in ther to act as a ball holder?

The spring is the only thing to stop double feeding. It works rather well if it is installed and situated correctly. If the internals are pulled out and you look down the bore of the body/breach you should see the spring obstructing the path slightly. If the body/breach is right side up then the spring will look like a small speed bump in the bottom of the tube. If you don't see the spring it is either bad or installed incorrectly.

As far as I know, there is no other method used on tracers to prevent double feeds. The spring has always done its job in my experiance. If you aren't happy with it feel free to try something else out and see how it works, there are enough tinkerers in here that would love to see something new. You could try using some of the rubber fingers with the base of the finger wedged between the body and the grip frame.

heres one I did to prevent rollouts on a sheridan, post breach detent

Good idea. Probably wouldn't be hard to intall a tippmann or spyder detent as an anti-double feed. Actually, I think I'm going to try that with the old trracer I have that doesn't have that detent spring, that should be pretty simple...

I solved that problem on my Trracers by the following (you'll need a lathe), I cut 1/2" off the breach end of the barrell, the unthreaded section, and made myself a set of sizers to replace the length removed. The barrell holds them securely when it's in place and it works a charm. I use a .685 and a .679 for really small paint like XO.
As far as ball breaks, if the double feed detent spring is in place, you're probably pumping too slowly. Also back your velocity off. I find 260 fpm is about ideal.

Do what I did...

Take it apart the Mav, remove the spring detent and degrease the breech. Let dry.

Add a drop of fingernail polish to the center of the groove that the detent resides in and let it dry. Return the spring and reassemble to test. If it's not "high" enough, repeat the process one-drop at a time until it's to your liking...and the marker operates properly as well (too much and the bolt won't go into the breech far enough).
