splatmaster rapide L68298 leaks

I have this brand new (1988 model). I just took it out of the box and put in a co2 cartridge and it shot, hissed and all the gas was gone and wouldn't take another shot. Any suggestions?

I dipped the end of the co2 in oil before inserting it and it works perfect. I am indebted to you!! Thanks so much!
