How to Time A Cocker (both OLD and Newer)?

Got too many Cockers, just moved away from my Cocker guru who used to keep mine in top shape (not to mention no one shoots Cockers anymore, so none of the fields know how to fix/time them anymore, either), so it's high-time I learn how to time and repair my 50+ Cockers.

Anyone know of a source to go to to learn how to time a Cocker properly? Does anyone have a how-to video or book on timing a Cocker (both those from the early '90's, as well as modern-day Cockers). I'm looking for something that goes beyond "place this allen wrench here and turn x-far," because that doesn't help. I need something that says, "First, you adjust xxxxxx. In doing so, (detailed explanation of what you're doing and what to look for in getting the Cocker in perfect time)."

Anyone out there able to help out?

Thanks.

Taking the Mystery Out of Timing an AutoCocker

One bit of advice... when you get it working, finally, don't touch anything unless you have to. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Another hint... if you have an inline reg, use that to set velocity. I turn the rear velocity adjuster to the point where the hammer is touching the valve stem, but not pushing against it. Basically, I turn the RVA until it is finger tight, no further. Then I use the inline reg to set velocity. This method seems to work well for my old Cocker.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar!!

Thanks for these invaluable links and tips.

I was out of paintball from '01 (when I quit my pro days) until early '07. Then the bug bit me again and I went on a buying rampage when I discovered that all those $1000+ Cockers and Angels I wanted could be had for a fraction of that. (So I bought more than 50 Cockers. LOL!!!) I also discovered that all guns now used inline-regs (at least, more so than they seemed to when I quit playing). All the Cockers I had purchased had inline-regs, and I discovered that ALL of them only shot around 230 fps...if I was lucky. I turned and turned the rear velocity lug to the point of insanity, often times unscrewing valuable internals, with no idea of how to fix them. When I went to a field one day and screwed up over 10 different Cockers and ended up spending the day shooting a Splatmaster, I realized that things had changed and I was doing something wrong.

Steve at the store I used to shop at (and field I used to play at in OH) was a die-hard Cocker nut who always fixed my marker free of charge (except for parts), and even taught me a few things in the process. One of those things was always tweak your front reg to get your velocity up...and to try and keep that front-reg velocity between 200 and 230 (if I remember right). Now that I'm away from him, it's on me to keep these things going.

So that's my story. Thanks for the advice!!

You don't mean the low pressure reg on the frontblock do you? That controls re-cock pressure only and does not affect velocity whatsoever.

Where in youngstown are you? I work at Battlefront paintball in Hubbard and actually see alot of cockers out there. I play with mine all the time and can teach you how to tune/time them.

Wow, that's what happened to me when I discovered mcarterbrown.com!

I went through the same teeth-gnashing experience with my AC trying to set the velocity... in my experience, changing spring tension is an unreliable way of setting velocity. If the spring is cranked way up, it weakens to the point of being useless. Inline reg pressure with a stiff spring is a better way of setting velocity.

I have heard that on an AC, if you change the inline reg's pressure, you have to re-adjust the LPR on the front block. However, I'm not sure how this works, exactly. I just make small adjustments for velocity using the inline reg and don't touch anything else unless I have to.

It's a true art to time a cocker correctly. Very little people around here know how to do it anymore. Everyone calls on me to do it so.... I taught my 5 year old how to do it. Those little buggers have a good feel for when it's just right.

I personally never adjust the spring pressure to adjust velocity. Do it all through the reg. The LPR's rarely need to be adjusted.

My Rules:
1 Set it up.
2 Leave it alone.
3 Don't clean it.
4 If it leaks a little, good. It's working properly

Because you may break something that was working before.

Thanks, I'm glad I didn't have to answer that one.
