On a serious note it depends where you hear the metallic clink from, the only metal moving on original parts is your bolt. Doesn't sound quite right, mine cycles without any noise from the bolt.

When my teammates were switching over to Pro/Ams, Mags, and Vm68s, I refused, and upgrade the 68-Special. That ka-PLINK sound when you fire is absolutely normal. In fact, its sort of a trademark of the 68-Special. It is the sound of the siphon banging against the tank, from the inertia of the massive hammer. The guns were over-engineered, and as a result there is very little that can fail on them. There are plenty of 18 year old 68-Specials floating around that work just as good as they did when new. The main things to look out for: 1- Blow internal line. Easy to replace with microline 2- Cracked feedneck. Harder to replace (ie JB Weld) 3- Cracked breechneck. Ditto 4- Cracked bolt rod. Easy to replace Also be careful with small bore paint. It tends to fall into the breech port, and get chopped. The easiest solution is use large bore paint. Otherwise, just wrap a rubber band around the breech, over the port, to keep the balls in line. Also make sure the bolt-rod has good orings. When those break you will have a bad day. Though, it is REALLY, REALLY easy to convert the 68-Special to PUMP. Just reverse the bolt-rod, and connect to a makeshift pump.
