The poppet in the mini is responsible for the majority of the air that propels the ball. Once the bolt moves forward enough to uncover the two larger ports in the bolt guide, the loss of pressure behind the poppet can no longer be compensated for by the tiny hole in the poppet. The poppet becomes unbalanced and moves rearward, dumping air down the middle of the bolt guide and propelling the paintball.

It has very little in common with Automags, or the TPX or Phenom.

A Mini is most definitely not a spool valve in the traditional sense. And not all spool valves have the bolt acting as the valve. Most do, but it is a poor generalization.

In most instances in paintball, a spool valve operates by moving an axial seal away from an exhaust port (completely removed like in a Matrix or Hollowpointed Ion, or partially in a stock Ion or Shocker) and a poppet operates by removing a face seal from an exhaust orifice. There are a lot of gray areas, but most guns would fall under similar classifications. There are tons of "hybrid" systems out there that have features of both (MQ valve, Mini, Nova), they're usually either classified one or the other by the inventor or given a new buzzword to try and isolate them and make them feel special in some way (like saying a G3 is a dump valve when it is a form of a spool). There is no all inclusive final definition describing the two.

I always thought of dump valve being a specific type of spool system, similar to "balanced poppet valves" - just a specific style of a broader definition. I don't really see how it could be considered not a spool.

So back to the spool valve, cause that's what this thread is about rite?
I was pretty sure you cranked back the bolt with romans moving about a large wheel to cock it. Then I was pretty sure they used a pair of scissors to fire it.

definitely Romans....they were the only ones who mastered spool technology, however the Greeks were a close second followed by the Vikings...
