Yeah ebay ruined itself with stupid horrible powersellers jamming the pages full of spam.

200 NON halibrand wheels listed as halibrand in a usually 30 or so item search really gets annoying. Searching anything paintball barrel and having to overlook 100's of "sniper" barrels for whoever.

Its not the way I like it.

I do not think that the tax system should be so crappy that we have to jump through mountains of hoops just to end up back at square one. Anyone avoiding these taxes is someone I would not judge.

I think there is some confusion between Sales Tax and Income Tax. States are now going after companies such as ebay for Sales Tax. They are putting pressure on them to make sure the Ebay population is correctly reporting their proper state taxes. It makes sense that the Federal Government is following this path to more revenue.

As for selling stuff on ebay, every time it changes hands the state government SHOULD be recieving sales tax for the destination state, unless your buyer lives in one of the great states that do not have a sales tax. This is the tax that is painful to track for us. We should fear it.

Check this out though, if you bought something new, sell it used, then technically, you can claim it as a business loss under current tax code. I've never actually made money on any of my sales with the exception of a few bucks here and there. I wind up breaking even on most of my trades.

If you do a huge volume in sales guys, I'd look into itemizing them as expenses and revenue. Chances are, you won't have to pay taxes when it all adds up, and, in cases like mine, might even get some breaks when it all comes down to it.

The really stinky thing is when we all start trying to deduct loses on selling our used gear, it could lead to major headaches and the dreaded audit. On the other hand, if you manage to squeeze out a few extra dollars on your sale of used gear, the IRS will be more than happy to take your payment on the income.

collect a few advertisers. Do some reviews. Anything you use for content is a business expense.

This makes me smile. It is about time. And I will not get into what I think about those who are actually running a business under the guise of “private sales” on paintball forums.

So don't sell things on ebay. =) Come here first. I mean...what is it to the IRS if I just so happened to "give" a paintball gun to this lovely person, and then they "forced upon me" cash in return. After all, that person wanted to pay back my generosity, right? ^_~ We'll find a way around it.

what scares me is having to establish what i paid for something, and have proof i paid it. think about it, how many of you have real PROOF of what you paid for all your guns? if you don't have proof, you may be liable for the full sale price as capitol gains.

Wouldn't proof be the concern of the IRS and not the taxpayer?

If there is no way to prove how much something cost or how much was spent on an ebay item then it would seem to me that Uncle Sam would be the one on the losing end.

However, I don't think us keeping track is going be the problem. It is going to be when ebay and the feds figure out how to keep track of yet another aspect of our lives.
