They play cricket in some places too, that doesn't make it a real sport.

You go over to India and tell them Cricket is not a sport and see how many of them chase you around with a cricket bat trying to kill you!

Paintball isn't on TV often, and it's not taken seriously as a sport for a lot of reasons. It's hard to film because everyone's hiding, it's boring to watch because no one moves, and it's hard to take seriously because everyone cheats and has a piss poor attitude.

There's an easy solution for these, but it won't be adopted anytime soon. 5-man stock class speedball. I'm not saying this because I prefer stock class to electros, but it makes sense. Playing stock class the players can and will make big moves. Guys have to reload every 10 shots, and change 12 grams every 30 or so. There's plenty of opportunities for flanking and big run throughs (not run threws).

I know most of the people here have played all pump or all stock class games and know that there's more movement, so I'm basically preaching to the choir. But the people involved in promoting paintball and selling paint and fancy gun accessories aren't about to consider throwing those things out in favour of simple stock guns and teams sharing a case of paint for the whole day.

We need to just combine al genres of Paintbal along with 4 or 5 different other sports and we'll have an amusing format.

First off - Scenario play and American Football.
Each team gets a "kicker" - a 2" grenade launcher. He loads up the mini vortex and "kicks off" to the other team. The field length should be about 50% longer than the max range of the vortex which will also be a little longer than the max range of a paintball.

Both teams line up anywhere they want along the back tape. When the ref blows the whistle, it's game on. The kicking team can't pass the kicker until he fires the vortex but they can all run forward as a large line. With both teams effectively out of range when the whistle blows, it gives you a good running start, a good, clean setup and that whole "kickoff" feel.

Misc. rules - if the kicker is eliminated before he fires the football, the other team scores a 'touchdown' automatically. Any player on the kicking team to pass the kicker before he fires is eliminated. Note that the length of the field requires the kicker to run forward quite a bit in order to get the vortex all the way to the other side. This all gives the recieving team more time to set up and establish a clear offense.

As soon as a player picks up the vortex, the shot clock starts. If you don't get rid of the vortex within thirty seconds, you're eliminated and the vortex drops. You can pass the ball to a teammate to reset the clock. Note that throwing/catching in tight situations becomes hairy. This will force the back players to pass the ball repeatedly while the whole team tries to advance as a unit. The defense is trying to stop progress and eliminate the offense the whole time.

First down is midfield. When the ball crosses midfield, all eliminated players on both sides are back in play. This can be a pass, a run or a throwing or launching "kick." If you're the last player on your team and you have the ball with only 30 seconds, you've got to get rid of it and perhaps the best way to do it is to kick it back over to the other team to reinsert all players. Reinserted players come in from the back line. Players eliminated and still walking back to the back line don't get to come back in. You've got to tag up and stay there. The same team cannot achieve a first down twice in a row. That is, the other team must touch the vortex before another first down can occur. Lastly, you can't cross midfield before the ball or you're eliminated.

With the reinsertion rule, it becomes a two-part game much like having the blue line in hockey. You can eliminate the whole team but as soon as you cross midfield on your way to score, they're all back in.

A bit of volleyball and basketball with the shot clock, a bit of football, a bit of hockey.

Scoring would work like football with a bit of rugby rules and more of a basketball/target style "field goal."

When one team scores, they kick off to the other team. You play four 10-minute quarters.

Limited Paint games are better to film/watch.

Limited Paint games won't happen because Paint manufactures are big sponsors of Paintball on TV.

So Paintball on TV won't get better because if it would it's lose the paint manufactures and then they'd have nothing to shoot.

I think that is how it goes...

^ Good point. I always enjoy watching pump or SC over anything with 20 bps gizmos.

I just don't see further commercialization of the sport as anything useful, but those that do might think about making the televised sport far funkier ... I'm talking robotic clowns with razor-blade arms and lots of those little bubble wands. So many bubbles. Oh man.

This Moneyball guy is persistant. They posted on PBN and I don't think they got a single supporter, and yet they keep trying to push it with the same exact rules. I personally like the idea of a starting line, I've always looked at laning as being luck for the most part. But being able to eliminate people without shooting them is going to cause huge problems with reffing. From the sounds of the rules, he's trying to eliminate bunkering altogether.

Paintball is probably never going to be a TV sport. It's just not possible to make a center focus and still keep it paintball. There's no other team sport where every player has the chance to do something huge at anytime like in paintball. It's not like basketball of football where you have to get the ball to make a big play.

As far as I'm concerned we don't need paintball on TV. There are already enough kids thinking they're the next big thing.

A game with a starting line, pumps, or limited paint would be great though.
