The phrase "to the next level" needs to sunset, in a very bad way.

That said, I like some of this guy's ideas... Just not any of the ones associated with "moneyball". Standard numbers and names on jerseys are a good thing. So are standard jersey/uniform designs.

If this means there isn't as much space for sponsor logos, then it's time to find another way to display them. Silk screen them onto the netting. Velcro patches on the bunkers for something like a 2x2' logo.

I like centerflag, but it's not the only variant of the game. A way to make the game more entertaining might be to use a combination of respawn times and moving respawn points. Even taking away the flag, and assign certain bunker positions point values for when they're held.

If you need a format for TV then why not focus around the snake (thats where the action is anyway, no one wants to watch 2 back guys lobbing paint at eachother), lets say whoever has a player in the snake's "zone" for 15-30 seconds wins. When a player enters that zone a countdown timer starts and if he stays there the game ends. It will make the guys try their best to get to the snake, then prevent the other team from getting their guy out. That way there would be a point of focus for the cameras, rest of the guys could still win the game in a "normal" manly way (=shooting out the opposition, no sissy sprinting with E-Money flag) and if everyone was to prevent players from getting their snake player out it would leave more room for run throughs and such.

Breakouts are fun to watch and easy to film, why not include them instead of makin a line where players can start....

Limiting BPS to lower than 15 wont happen and I really don't see a reason for it. 15 cap, shoot as you will, just no full auto/burst for safety reasons. It's just more exciting to watch with 15 BPS than lets say with stock markers "oooh whats that, I think he made a shot"

The idea is - instead of focusing on some dude standing up behind a huge inflatable cylinder beaming paintballs at some guy no one can see on the other end of the field, the focus would be on the dude who just ran diagonally across the field and flew over a guys bunker while shooting him with one shot before he hit the ground.

Can't anyone just accept the fact that paintball makes for a crappy spectator sport?

It's all a matter of opinion, but I disagree.

I watched some televised woodsball tourneys back in the day and that was what brought me into the sport. The semi-autos thse guys and gals were using certainly were stock class, but they retained the relevance of the single shot. That aspect of the sport has been lost, and speedball has become all about hosing down a lane and not about marksmanship. Electro paintball guns do not have the oomph of real firearms, and their dinky noises only remind me of just how effete the whole enterprise is. Watching a player shoot away at something offscreen is NOT fun for me. What I enjoyed about the old woodsball footage was the balance of careful shooting and movement, the de-emphasis on continual action and the lack of Clown-like clothing/players.

Paintball will never be the extreme action sport that dirt-bike racing or skateboarding are. Nor will it ever fit the football format as well as football does. There's no reason to force ourselves in those directions, but for the naive belief that that's where the money is. I just don't see the vision. [Ignore the pun.]

So Mr. Moneyball may be right in realizing that things need to change, but I don't think he has nearly wrapped his head around what needs changing. Honestly, I think the drive to standardize the sport is the WORST notion going in paintball, or at least the worst executed. Sure, that way every asshat with $5k can purchase the same field that the pros use, but that means as much as the fact that the richest and the poorest in this country all drink Coke. Football benefits from a regulated playing field. Paintball does not. Scenario videos are the only paintball visuals that I enjoy nowadays because they offer the chance to see something different every time.

If people are still die-hards for current speedball, then their best chance is to make things WAY funkier. Here's my idea: combine speeball with Family Double Dare. The flag's in the center, eh? Well how about we put it in a GIANT GOOEY WAFFLE!? And first one to correctly answer five trivia questions in a row wins a BRAND NEW CAR! Or something to that effect.

Money ball is terrible & ridiculous.
I think of all the changes/improvements that can be made on the subject it comes down to the filming & camera men. When I played woodsball tourneys in the 90s it was fun to watch other teams from the sidelines, but more fun and more to actually watch nowadays with speedball. Watching speedball on tv though usually doesn't cut it as well as it could and I think it comes down to the camera men & way it's filmed & edited, NOT the format of the game.

They need to find a way to do it better so that you can see what's actually going on. Maybe more picture in picture usage so that they can get simultaneous shots of the player shooting and the player being shot at? It's not really that exciting to see someone shooting off the screen. It's all in the filming & editing. Better camera angles, filming from raised platforms/cranes, picture in picture
