Censorship in the military isn't anything new. During WW2 all mail to and from the troops was censored to ensure that troop movement and any other data was protected from coming out of the battle areas.

Even in the video in that news story if you think about it the location and appearance of those buildings could be used by the enemy to gain an idea of which town and what buildings the troops are billeted in and as targeting info for a bomb or rocket attack. Doesn't the allied side use the same sort of info for the same thing?

So yeah, I can see why they would limit access. It's not that anyone plans on disclosing info that may become harmful but who knows what sort of outdoor filming could provide info for an effective attack?

It's short sighten to cut them off though. Perhaps some sort of submission for review and then posting could be put in place. After all, it's a lifeline for the families that is with us and won't go away.

To any of the troops reading take care and come back safe. And for the record I totally agree with the need to stop the terrorism and any regimes that support terrorism. There are other, proper ways to deal with us "infidels" that do not involve bloodshed.

My brother was in Afganistan for over a year. He told me that the army tried that once already and failed. The networking skills those boys have can easily out do any road blocks the military puts into place.

Hotmail at times for months was blocked too.

I think the story that was reported on your behalf was a good one. It was well done - I hope that you don't end up in trouble since they used your name...

I see good and bad, the videos humanize the war without skewing it like the press can tend to do. It just shows it from the soldier's point of view. It brings the point home that when every soldier has a camera the truth is what we will all see.

But that old phrase "loose lips sink ships" comes to mind.

I love watching the "video diary" on the military channel. There's some great stuff on there that is submitted and approved by the military.
