ALL teams will take in players during the pre-season that were released from other teams just to find out the signal system they were using on there old team. The Pats were long accused of taking in players from Miami and NY just to milk them for information. 100% legal... just a bit sneaky. Its also pretty standard to send scouts to all the other games to watch for coaching patterns, and signal patterns. 100% legal, but also sneaky. The Pats just took that to the next level and apparently actively filmed the coaches relaying signals. that is apparently against the rules. That said, the Patriots coach is already saying he didn't violate the rules as he interpreted them, and that he had permission of sorts. Sounds like he is just in damage control mode to me. Not that it matters. They have a great team this year, and none of the penalties they are talking about will effect this year. nick

| in the bigger picture, all of this stuff is a direct result of how much money there is in sports. I'll bet in the long run that the owners are happy, as it will ultimately be spun into an anti-player deal and salaries will come down. (gates down because of all the cheating, guess we gotta cut something...) |

| I also heard on ESPN that there was some debate over what radio frequency the guy with the camera was on, which tells me that he was trying to eavesdrop on the radio calls as well as record the hand signals. it the going to really impact a team estimated to be worth $1.2 Billion? Not at all. Is this going to be embarrassing to Belichick? Not one bit. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. If you ask me, the team should also be fined by not getting any "official" footage of an opposing team for an upcoming game... |
