| I've killed my share of nuisance animals - things chewing on the house, gnawing on wires etc. I've always done it regretfully and with respect for the animal. .22 to the brain - quick, clean death. It's a very different story to use an item intentionally designed to NOT kill as a lethal weapon. Skunks are pretty tough little creatures - I'm pretty sure it was a gruesome and painful death. If the kids were 10 - then you can chalk it up to stupidity - but they're 17 - plenty old enough to know better. The ban will only last till they're 18 - I assume their records will be purged at that point. I say, stupid get what stupid deserves. |

| As it is they couldn't legally own a paintball gun/airgun etc.. until they are 18.... they also (legally) can't use one without adult supervision... so they are lucky their parent guardians didn't get smacked with a fine too. E

| I feel the punishment fits the crime pretty well, I would like to know how they were caught for these actions, though. I mean me and my friends have plunked around at trees in the woods when we were just starting out, and I'm pretty sure that if a squirrel or small creature happened across our path - we would have taken some pot shots at it as well. Not a smart thing to do, but boys will be boys - and when WE started out we were about 12/13. But these days, some kids are worse at 17 than they are at 12, once they have some bonehead friends to get them into mischief. However to shoot enough on something to kills it, and kill SEVERAL different animals, they were probably going out with the sole purpose of harming animals. And if they were stupid enough to get caught doing so(i imagine it would be pretty hard to do out in the woods unless you were bringing the dead animals out of the woods to show off or something) then they definitely up to some shady business. I'm sure if we heard every detail of the story we would be much more up in arms. I mean we all shoot paintball guns, and theres no way you can kill a tough little mammal at distance with one unless you are cranking up your velocity to do it, using some sort of hard ammo other than paintballs, or ganging it up and shooting it 30+ times at point blank range. I have a feeling these kids weren't into paintball as much as they were into what paintball guns can be used for alternatively - no real loss to our community in my opinion.

| Active Member | Skunks are pretty tough little critters. The fact that they killed not one, but two of them shows that this wasn't just a case of "good kids doing something stupid". Granted I've shot my fair share of raccoons, but it's usually a single shot to the rump to scare them off.

| Ultimate Battle Monkey Z | I shot a squirrel by accident once. I'm pretty sure it lived. It moved out of the area very quickly. I still feel a little guilty. I can't imagine just bludgeoning an animal the size of a cat to death with paintballs. I'm of the opinion that these were not very good kids after all.

| The fact that they were on State Game lands probably didn't help. Most states are pretty particular anyway about protection of animals.....but on State property.....they're VERY serious. How can you not mean to kill TWO skunks. Ok I could maybe see you shoot one to see what happens (I'm not condoning, I'm just saying I could see dumb kids doing that).....but if you've already killed one, you have to know you're going to kill the second one. How close were they when they opened up? Their markers are to be destroyed? WHAT? How about state auction! I'll give them 5 bucks for all three.....whatever it is. |
