Interesting. I'd like to know more about how things were run - did everyone chrono safely, how many refs were around, were there any people caught cranking up the velocity, were there any random FPS checks...

If they've really done a better job, all of the above need to be positive.

I assume you attended the game a few years ago hosted by the GLSPB, back then the place was not staffed or equipped to host that many players and be able to police them all, however willing. Cheating, wiping and general unsafeness was the result.
When the GLCF hosted the fields first ever big event a few weeks before that one, I had a team of player/refs policing the game as well as the regular staff, for about half as many people, around 50-75 people who were mostly our friends, everything went smoothly. The GLSPB had 150-200 people and around 8 refs. On a property that size with buildings that size, it was no surprise to me about the complaints of wiping and hot shooting.

Now

There were only 6 of us playing but there were about 8 refs. We all had to chrono, there were no random checks as we were only 6 of us, 4 of us friends, and 2 local players, if there were hot shooting we would have known who the culprit was. Also our day there was an invitational trial run so that they could get pointers on what needed to be done and what they could improve on. They were very receptive to our criticisms and suggestions.
