sorry to hear about her. however i cannot get teared up. acts of violence happen daily. trust me when i say im sorry for her and the family and hope the attacker is caught. but to me its no more than someone gettin shot with a real gun or stabbed or robbed or beat up. it happens all the time, just because its done with a paintball marker doesnt make it any more....intresting to me.

anyways. do hope the attacker is captured and if the police say theres nothing they can do you better get a lawyer to make em do something, even if it is a worthless effort i still say make them spend money and man hours trying, that or i would go vigilante justice as much have reccomended. least if it was my daughter i would go vigilante

The problem is that when someone gets beaten with a baseball bat they don't automatically assume in the press that it's a baseball player but when someone gets assaulted with a paintball marker it is implied in the reports that the attacker is a paintball player. That's why paintball enthusiasts(at least ones with my attitude) get angry when these things happen and get into the press' hands.

That's a good example of why a frozen paintball does more damage. The viscosity of the fill becomes so thick that the shell can't deform enough to break and disperse the energy. It's the difference between getting hit with a water balloon full of water or one full of bread dough.

I know I've posted this in another thread, but it warrants being posted again. At a recent visit to the local shop, I overheard a conversation between some "young adults" regarding the quality of some form of paintball grenade. Apparently, according to these clowns, it was a poor quality grenade as it had failed to splat against the windshield of another car after they had thrown it from their car. I seriously don't think I've ever heard anything more moronic than that, but the casual tone throughout their conversation leads me to believe it's not even that rare of thing to do. Crazy.

Although this is also a stupid thing to do, I don't think the danger of hurting someone with a thrown paintgrenade is nearly as high as a paintbal shot out of a marker at 300 fps (or possibly higher). But you're right, they are morons.

Almost all paintball players, including myself, hate hearing stories like this one, where idiots use paintball markers to intentionally hurt people. Yet many, if not most paintball players don't get particularly upset when players "bonus ball" another player, where the reason for doing it is exactly the same, to intentionally hurt someone. To bonus ball another player means you are trying to physically hurt them, much like a hockey player that swings his stick at another player. I realize a paintball player is wearing a mask and is probably used to paintballs hitting him, but it always seems like a bit of a double standard, to be appalled by one and be willing to accept the other, when both are meant to cause pain for another human baing. Anyway, hopefully I won't drag this too far off topic.

Hopefully people can let this girl get on with her life after having to deal with this act of violence. If it was me, I probably wouldn't want it dragged back to the surface over and over again. Sounds like she is coping with it anyway.

I have no tolerance for bonus balling but it's simply bad sportsmanship. While it should be penalized because it is bad sportsmanship it's not any more dangerous than the "legal" paint that shot the player out. If you're on a paintball field as a player, ref or spectator you have to assume that some paintballs will hit you at some point during your time on the field. An intentional shot to an eliminated player, ref or spectator is unacceptable but sometimes an unintentional one is unavoidable. Sometimes an eliminated player will get an extra ball or two because he walks through a lane of fire or does not clearly signal out by putting his gun up before exiting his bunker and that unfortunately is part of the game. If you're posted on someone and see them expose themselves without a call of "Out!" or a gun in the air you're probably going to have paint in the air before they indicate they are out if they just stand up without a signal. I've seen lots of folks do that because they get mad about the elimination. They get shot and get mad so instead of shouting or putting their gun up they just stand straight up and walk away. If someone does that, they are asking to get shot again IMHO and it's their own fault because they let their temper keep them from taking care of the basic parts of the game. That is not a bonus ball, that is simply someone not indicating their status in the game. Paintball is an action sport, it moves fast and adrenaline is high. In that situation if you don't make a point to clearly signal you are out, you are going to get shot when someone sees you out of your cover. It's impossible to take a second or two before every trigger pull to make sure the person you're in a firefight with is in or out because the game moves too fast. That's why the eliminated player has the responsibility of clearly signaling they are out when they get eliminated. All that being said, putting a couple on an eliminated player's back just to be a dick is totally unacceptable and needs to be punished aggressively.

I think the girl has moved on with her life. It happened when she was 15 and she's a college student now. I think the page on her dad's photography site is there to make people aware of the dangers of irresponsible/criminal use of paintball equipment and is probably how he coped with the trauma this caused him. There is nothing worse than being a father and knowing you can't do anything to help when your child is hurt. He did what he felt he could and it was probably therapeutic. At least he went about it in the way he did rather than the way the crazy guy with the manifesto about paintball abusing children handled his concerns about the game.

Agreed, nonr of that is bonus balling.

Agreed. And I think this is where our sport falls short. Most sports leagues, pofessional and amateur (especially amateur, where there are kids involved). crack down heavily on anyone that maliscioulsly tries to hurt someone. We don't. Penalties, if given, are minor, and it reflects badly on the sport. If I were a parent contemplating if I should let my son/daughter pick up the game and went to a competition where I saw a player break the rules and purposely try to hurt another player for no other intention than to inflict pain and discomfort, and basically go unpunished, I would be very hesitant to let my child participate.

And yes, I agee that it is the DAd's way of handling the tradgedy. I have done similar (write) when my family has been struck with tradgedy, so I can understand.

The scar on my shoulder says otherwise.

Still, the fill does not have to be frozen to be dangerous. If it gets thick, it's already dangerous, not to mention a normal-temperature paintball at 300fps is a hazard to begin with.

They don't freeze solid but the fill gets very thick. I got hit with some that a dork had left in his car for a couple days in 15 degree temps and the one that broke just flattened like a pancake and hung on my shirt like silly putty. It wasn't intentional on his part, he was just too stupid to put 2 and 2 together.
