Student arrested for bringing his paintball gun to school

This is new:

Northwest Herald - Local News and Video for McHenry County, Illinois - Student charged after bringing paintball gun part

Heated discussion via the comments too.

In short, the kid was arrested for a paintball gun "part".

Now sounds like the school officials did the right thing when they were told someone might have a "gun".

But when I read on, and find out the "part", was just a paintball gun "grip frame" only...

As posted in the comments.

Well... That makes me concerned.

Thoughts?

Hmmmm

Penn State didn't want you to have paintball equipment on campus. You were requested to keep it at the on campus police station (they held peoples hunting rifles there too) where you could withdraw it for use off campus.

I of course got my RA's "permission" to keep it in my room and he had no problem with it.... after he took the gun gassed it up.. ran through the bldg kicked open the door of some guys who became good friends and proceeded to dry fire about 30 quick shots... That was his safety test as he called it... yup gun seems safe, you can keep it.

Should I have had it in my room... well I never caused trouble with it and it was kept under lock and key and no one screwed with it... but technically I shouldn't have had it there.

I suppose in this day and age anything that remotely looks like a firearm will set off the warnings, and its good that it did. But here is another situation that someone is getting punished for someone elses misconception. Sad really that its come to this.

On a midly related note, local authoraties "thwarted" an attack on the highschool that is just around the corner from my wife's employement/my little girl's daycare.

I find this very odd because I had just finished refinishing the stock on my kp2 at school and the metal shop teacher asked me to bring the rest in for reblueing, touch ups etc.

Mind you there was only him, another student and I but he had found it very interesting as he had just bought his son one. And a couple of the other teachers had came in to look at it as well, no one mentioned anything about it being a gun and being dangerous and etc.

Yeah the two guys in the room (Bryan and Jason) hit the deck... Bryan had been at his desk setting up his radio.. he pretty much dove into his closet that was on the same wall as the door.... Jason had been laying on his own bed... some how he rolled to the wall side of the bed and rolled to the floor.

Pretty damn funny to watch as I was about 10 steps behind my RA trying to catch up.

Not a paintball gun, but we had a similar false alarm here in SoCal a couple weeks ago. A ROTC student carried his non-functioning training rifle inappropriately on a college campus (in plain view) and it caused a rather large law enforcement reaction.

Sounds like they kept the school safe from investigation and sound judgment.

Just ask the kid. If you know the kid isnt a troublemaker, just ask him. He says its just a paintball gun part, you check it out, and it is.. then all is good, we all go back to our day jobs, and just ask him to leave it at home next time. Maybe call the parents.

You know, if the media hasnt been so hard at work in the past 40 years making guns the bad guy, maybe we would all have less of an issue with this sort of thing. Our sport would probably have less bad press as well.

A big part of it was probably the shooting at NIU on valnetines day which is only a half hour or so away. All the schools around here are very jumpy right now.

After reading a few of the comments, I have no doubt at least some of the first pictures the uninformed public found were airsoft and milsim replicas.

Jeeze I would of been sent directly to jail back in high school by todays standards..

Prior to me getting my mill in around 2000/2001 I did all of my cocker body milling on my high schools Bridgeport granted after normal school hours... I have a very good friendship with the teacher and still help him out with his robotics team.
