I don't see how a micro encapsulated pesticide would work since systemic pesticides don't kill on contact. They have to be ingested to work properly. Also, systemic pesticides actually are absorbed into plant tissue making firing them from a paintball gun ineffective. Even if your shooting them high into the tree tops where normal J-D9's cant reach, the wind will make them as useless as normal applications. My guess is they have them micro encapsulated so they can put them in areas that aren't treated as often and let the water/rain break down the shell giving longer lasting effectiveness in less monitored areas.

The paintballs are instead of a soil-drench or basal application. 2 paintballs for a small tree would be fired into the ground or onto the trunk. Not sure if the formulation of merit would be dry or liquid, which would determine where it was shot. Merit can last up to 2 years in a tree, but take up to 3-4 months to be taken up in this form of application

Based on the dosage whether it will be effective against anything or not. I have used Merit in the past and it takes a lot of product to knock down the simplest of insect, that a more potent pesticide would have taken out in minutes. I have done tree infections, mauget ( pronounced mo-sh-jay) treatments as well topical applications for years. As most realize that steps in this direction are better for the environment all together, most landscape owners want to see results vs whats new in the industry as this is what they are paying for. I have argued this with many bosses in the past, that want to use long term insect control, but your customers want to see instant results, especially with nuisance problems like lacebugs, jap beetles and and other insects that cause major damage in a minimal amount of time.

Merit works very well on small pests, but they need to injest it to work. I only like it for scales, mainly magnolia scale. Was at a recent class and they explained how merit and others in its family work on white grubs. Basically they stop grooming themselves (which the do 80% of the time) and this allows parisites in the soil to attack them, with no direct death caused by the chemical. So Merit is bug LSD and turns grubs into hippies.
