I just watched a segment about this on Fox 2. They never said "paintball," just "paintgun" and "paintgun enthusiasts."

When i heard the explosion i thought someone lighting off a firework until one of the refs ran by screaming for someone to call an ambulance. I could have sworn i felt the ground shake from over 300ft away.

I hope the man with the eye injury fully recovers, and im glad to hear the ref is ok.

Im suprised the day continued after this had happened.

That's a pretty long standing tradition at HS, PhantomXJ.
The few times I've seen someone hurt, everything stops until it's taken care of, then play resumes. In fact, the field manager, Shaun, who was pretty much at ground zero, worked for a while, then went home for a rest and came back to finish the day.

Mars(the injured Ref) has posted an update of the player on the HS forum:

I just got off the phone with someone who talked to Jeff's sister. He is being released, if not out already. They removed a fragment from his eye, and are optimistic. Only time will tell now, and hoping he can fight any infection.

Hopefully, all will heal back healthy!

Very interesting.
I've made some massive smoke nades before (up to 15 lbs). I wonder what they were made of. I've always used large cardboard tubes for the very reason that if any gases get "trapped", there is nothing to produce shrapnel.

I've also used some of the military-style. The kinda where you pull the pin, and there is a large 5-second spray of hot sparks, followed by pretty colored smoke.

Very sad. I hope he gets better as soon as possible.

AFAIK, most "warm" chemical smoke is a powdered oxidizer with a small ammount of combustible material and a good dose of flame-resistant smoking agent. Think of throwing wet leaves on a campfire.

I know there are cold chem smokes that don't use the oxidizer but that's not what it sounds like they had. I know KNO3 is popular and cheap as an oxidizer.

In a device that large, I'm guessing something settled out or was never mixed well enough and there was a pocket of combustibles much larger than normal. ???

"Get well soon" prayers to the injured.

When I grow up, I'd like to work selling paintgun and paintgun accessories.

I just couldn't resist that one.

Rob, thanks for keeping us updated with how the injured folks are doing. My thoughts go out to everyone in an incident like that. It's always sad hearing about someone getting badly injured at a fun event.

I hate smoke grenades, especially after taking one to the face (those horrible orange marine ones).
This is just further evidence that smoke grenades don't belong out on the playing field.

I remember being an attacker at Fall Castle '06 when that dreadful orange crap was hanging in the air. I managed to get a good whiff of that and I'm surprised nobody choked to death from those things.

Interesting- The Potassium Clorate used in commercial smoke nades is also the main ingredient in plastic explosives. Wiki says that they have been known to explode under certain conditions.

Interesting.

I was tempted to bring one of my massive ones to EMR, just for the after party, but in light of recent events, it might seem in poor taste.
