Paintball Guns to be Used in Iraq

Quote:
Apparently, the new weapon against insurgents in Iraq is a paintball gun. Mind you, it's a paintball gun that uses paintballs full of a mixture of paint and the brittle metal bismuth, and it's a paintball gun that fires at 900 PSI compared to the standard 300-500 PSI, but it's a paintball gun all the same.

The non-lethal weapon is meant for crowd control and getting people down without killing them. That's all well and good, but with the bismuth inside designed to fragment on impact, I'm wondering just how non-lethal these things actually are. While they might not kill you outright if they hit you (unless you take it in the eye or something), you're going to be in a serious world of hurt.

I mean, technically a baseball bat could be considered a non-lethal weapon, but I don't know if it makes it laudably humane.

I know Pro-Team specialized in this stuff... are they the one contracting it? It looks like one of their designs.

If you remember back to 2004, one of these guns, in the hands of a Boston Police Officer, killed a young woman post Red Sox ALCS victory. Shot her right in the eye. Boston Police have outlawed the use of the FN303 since. They are made by Fabrique Nationale (FN).

Tom Kaye of AGD designed a good portion of the 303.

yeah boston had all theirs melted down after the death. Those things are quite nasty. They're also designed to be able to shoot a ball filled with pepper spray.

All paintball guns can shoot a ball filled with pepper spray.

"less than lethal" always means "still can be lethal" so a fatality with one of these types of tools is not really a surprise. Dont shoot people in the, and dont shoot unless the risk of injuring them is less substantial of a risk than the harm the people you are shooting at are causing.

IIRC, wasn't her death due to an allergic reaction to the pepper agent rather than the impact? I mean, technically pepper spray could have killed her as well.

Weltman and I got to see the dents in the steel door from that gun when we went to visit AGD and got the Full Tour.

the clean room making the pepper rounds was sweet...
