KP rivets.

I am wondering what to do with the trigger guard on my KP. As of now it has the split rivets holding the trigger guard in place. I am going to refinish the stock but would like some ideas to look into for getting the guard remounted properly.

There is no doubt the guard has to come off to accomplish this. I just want to make sure I do it in a sound way. I am planning on drilling the rivets out, Is it okay to drill them?

I think the majority will say leave it on.... Unless it's loose already... You'll need a special tool to redo the rivets or you can use screws but they look like garbage... You can sand it down with the stock and even hit it with the same oil .. they look real good...

The rivets are a little loose and rusted. The guard itself is rusted as well.

I am familiar with split rivets however I have never personally set them.

I've been searching the web for a tool.. I'm assuming it's like a c-clamp type device... I'm thinking of just making a attachment for the c-clamp I have and trying that...

They are a tolerance fit and can be driven in and out. However, it ain't easy... Out is the hard part, in is careful driving. I used punches, levering at them just gouges at the wood it seems.

I had to work on my stock for the 2. The rivets were a little loose. I took a narrow slim standard screw driver to lift each leg into a position to pull the rivits. Of course you want to protect the wood and be oh so gentle. I reused my split rives and the guard tightened right up.
I have a true hardware store that I use from time to time that I plan to take one of the rivets for them to match up. These guy's always have been able to help me.
Goog luck.

Yeah I have seen em for sale in my local shop

I think I will do what I can to remove them in one piece. IF I break em, well its time for new.

i used a bench grinder to shape the end of an old screwdriver and used it to pry the ends up on the rivet. it wasn't easy, but it can be done without damaging the wood. just be carefull and watch what your prying against and use some small pieces of wood to rest the shank of the screwdriver against.

as far as the tool goes for setting the rivets, i haven't a clue. i used blindnuts and a round head cap screw to attach the guard back.

My stock was finished by a professional gun smith (I know isn't as much fun as doing it yourself), and he filled the holes with an epoxy. After refinishing the stock he screwed the trigger guard back on with cap screws. Looks great!
