Talking Gutting a Typhoon's lower tube...

Part 6 of the ongoing saga...

The ASA is off the Typhoon, the valve is out, and the Rock has been almost completely disassembled.

The only thing left to remove is the 'front' side of the valve assembly, which seems attached to the 'back' side of the Rock assembly. This is the part that the ASA screws in to.

It moves back and forth as one piece, and would appear to come out through the back of the lower tube, but it gets to a certain spot and stops. Even using a dowel down the front of the lower tube and a few light mallet taps, it just won't budge.

Any thoughts on getting this out?

Thanks.

[edit] Azzy - you're absolutely right. I'm at work posting from memory, which is apparently failing me. The lower tube, from the back, is smaller than the front. There's a threaded portion that looks like a slightly smaller OD tube soldered inside the main tube.

it comes out the front, not the back. At least thats how my hurc was.

You can get it out by pushing it from behind, just watch you dont loose any small parts that were in there.

I had to use something long and thin through the air feed hole to get it out.

If you are clearing the tube out completely, then it is easier to bring the stuff out the front AND the back. The LPR and associated bits can be pushed out the front and the valve and such behind it can be pushed out the back.

Be patient and try not to mar any of the surfaces (especially the round sides) while you are trying to muscle the parts out. Otherwise, you will be compromising O rings on re-install or, worse yet, causing leaks.

I usually use a allen wrench or some other slender bent thing to push the lpr parts out of the front using the little holes and such that reveal the bits.

Since the typhoon is scratch-built PPS... is the LPR different then a converted KP Hurc?? I mean the stock KP has the soldered in outer valve guide.. Does a typhoon have this also or is it a clean empty tube...

If it's a clean empty tube setup it might just have a set-screw holding in a assembly..

I've never taken apart a scratch build Hurc or typhoon yet.. I don't think I'd like too either... This is a good post too learn from though.. take some pic's if you get a chance...

Thanks.

The valve is out - it came out the back.
The Rock is also out - it came out the front.

What's left appears to be one solid piece, and from what I can see (and Azzy's reminding me), it will only come out the front.

I don't see a way to grab the part from the front inside the tube, so it appears I need to push it out from the back. From what I've done already, it's almost acting like something is stopping / blocking the part from sliding out.

I can move it with my hand, and rotate the part inside the tube. It slides back far enough to reveal an O-ring and almost completely hide the 1/8" port the ASA attaches to, but not that far forward once it's back in place.

The lower tube is completely apart now... The back of the Rock and the front of the valve are two separate pieces sealed together.

I'll get some pictures taken of everything taken apart and post them to my site, but first my two-year-old needs to eat dinner...

Just for future reference.

The "rock body" slides out of the front and is attached to the "coupler" that comes out of the back.
