It works fine for testing your system. The free version more so because it's had more recent support.

Yes, I just want to test my system. I have a feeling I can't run it.

So the demo seems to run pretty well. It defaulted to some high settings. I think if I turn down some of the video settings it will smooth out. This is encouraging. So does anyone know if the stand alone will be the same requirements as ArmaII?

It's important to remember that the normal settings are just that, and everything looks fine with things set there. Then you can work your way up. Viewdistance is the biggest performance killer because of the nature of the game. Operation Arrowhead would run about the same.

The ARMA 2/DayZ engine takes a lot to run smoothly, I can run BF3/TF2 and WOT with great or pretty good FPS on my system but when i play DayZ it looks like a Half Life 1 mod and my FPS is garbage. The new stand alone when ever it is released should have a more refined engine and look and run better. If Steam has it on sale in the spring or before it's worth picking up for the ARMA 2 game itself, which is a great game on its own.

Just played this afternoon with the new update, didn't even notice until I kept getting empty cans in my inventory after I drank a pop or ate food. Have to say it seems to run a bit smoother to me, especially when in a vehicle. Used to get real choppy when I was driving now had no problem zooming around town in the hatchback. Which I promptly drove into a swamp, stalling it, then destroying the body/engine/tires, catching on fire then exploding. Destroying all my extra gear I had just aquired.
Magazines now appear on the ground instead of the green generic sack, rifle bullets are shown in clips now and 2rd shotgun shells looks like dmr mags. All type of infection from like everything now, pond water unless boiled, raw meat, zombie attacks and blood transfusions. And lots of other stuff I haven't had to deal with as of yet. Zombies are supposed to be harder to avoid now and harder to ditch. Hopefully make the bandits job a bit harder to kill me now.

I have seen a couple of guides online about how to adjust your lower end PC to play games, and some specifically written with DayZ in mind.

How do you guys know what FPS you are getting, and what FPS is tolerable? I know movies (film) run at 24FPS and video 30, so shouldn't something around there be tolerable? I'm not sure why people want really high FPS.
