I have a file naming scheme I've been using for years:

YYYY_MM_DD_hh_mm_ss_[Camera Model]_[Image Number]

The take away is that a heavy shooter who will outstrip the four digit sequence number must plan for this and develop unique file names.

I follow the outsline Peter Krogh outlines in his book, but prefer a four digit year to a two digit year. And I mispoke about the sequence number. It's actually the file # suffix.

I have used Lightroom since beta, and while I appreciate it for the tool that it is, it was really slowing down my workflow. I still use it for family photos, but for my commercial work, I use Photo Mechanic.

I think my biggest disappointment with Photo Mechanic is that it's a browser as opposed to Lightroom being PIEware. Also, Lightroom allows me to upload straight to my Smugmug account. I can do everything I need to in LR now, save for actual photo manipulation.

You speak the truth! I only use PM for ingesting and renaming.

I'm a sick person who actually doesn't like any of the DAM type systems. Is there anything wrong with having one picture folder with 3773 files in it at the moment
