Horrible statement frequently made to photographers:

I'm really tired of people asking what kind of camera I shoot, because IT takes such great pictures. Total rubbish! My camera CAN'T take pictures, I take pictures.

End rant...

2 thoughts for the day... Shoot in manual mode only, and keep that horizon straight!

Ok, third thought for the day... selective color display is great for soccer moms, but that is pretty much where it ends.

Eh, you get it in anything. ie, you use a pump so you are more accurate. IMO it is a bit more complicated, but you get my point.

I just finished a photoshoot for a bunch of college kids literally 3 minutes ago. Just hopped on MCB before heading home from the office and saw this thread. I'd agree, it's horribly annoying. I had a 7D, battery grip, and a 70-200 f2.8 and at least a dozen of them had to comment about how expensive it must be and how it takes such amazing pictures.

I don't know... Do paintball players get offended when someone compliments them on their guns?

A paintball gun isn't what I'd consider a tool as much as a toy.....

You don't really hear construction workers say "woah, nice drill. Must have been really expensive, and I bet it turns screws really well!" It's not really an offense, just a peeve.

You do hear that in an industrial setting. I get complimented on my tools often. I have a depth gauge that gets a comment every time I whip it out.

And I compliment others the same. "Nice drill" comes up all the time.

Does "artistic" mean "sensitive" ? Is there not enough glory to share with a good tool?

If the camera doesn't matter at all, then why not carry a sony cybershot?

Would it maybe be better for photog culture to crack a huge smile and say "This camera takes awesome photos!" I'm sure you have enough confidence in your photography skills that someone can't just buy that camera and be instantly competitive. Or is that the concern?

I have a wireless mouse at work that has many programmable buttons. I have it set up to do a lot of my common tasks with one press. I get a lot of awe comments about it, and I rather enjoy the functionality of it.

Like I said, offended isn't really the word I'd use. Just kind of an awkward question.

Sounds like a perfect chance to educate the soccer mom and let her know it's the person behind the camera more than anything!
