Canon lens - what should I go for?

Hi everyone

I am in need of a good either prime or zoom lens that can provide quality near what the 70-200 IS2 lens provide. Eventually I will get the 70-200 IS2 (currently I am renting it for the occasional shoot), but in the mean time what kind of prime or zoom lens should I get to complement the 70-200?

I have a nifty-fifty but that is only a fun lens and make way too much noise. I also have an old 35-70(i think) from an old Canon Rebel (the film one) that doesn't provide very sharp focus.

My budget is going to be 2 paintball guns or 400 bucks +/- a few.

Thanks

I'd go for a 35 f2.0. I use one every so often on a spare body. The last shoot I did had my 70-200 f2.8 II on my main body with the 35mm on a second. It worked really well and I never felt like I needed to change lenses.

I have one of these in my bag as well, great little lens for the money. That said, I have hardly used it since I picked up a 70-200.

Not entirely, but I would like to have the option of auto focus for the time that I need to take a quick shot or two. Is there a lens that you have in mind?

Is this one any good?

Canon 85mm 1.8 lens

or this one?

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/pho/3250021429.html

and I have looked on Keh.com just that they are somewhat outside of my range right now. I found that I didn't like the feel of the standard 70-200 without the IS2.
