My First Football Game

Went to a game at a local high school tonight and brought my camera.

Wanted to share my photos. I'm going to try and get permission onto the field, taking photos from the stands is really annoying. That said, I really enjoy shooting candids more. I feel like more people appreciate these random shots than the in-game shots that are a dime a dozen.

Bumped into a friends mom and she asked me if I could get some photos of her daughter in Color Guard, so I said sure!

Just thought I'd share. Been a fun night of shooting. I don't think my ISO dropped under 1000 all night, I'm really amazed at how well this 7D is working.

Also, a girl in the band said my photos look great and she wants me to shoot her homecoming portraits.

Keep your shutter speed above 1/1000 to keep the action clean and free of blur. With the new software update for the 7D, you have adjustable auto ISO. USE IT!!! Set your upper ISO limit to 3200, and your shutter speed at 1/1000. The rest is gravy.

ISO 3200, even at 2.8, was causing issues with underexposure. I was pushing ISO 6400 at some times. That top photo was taken at ISO 6400 iirc.

WONDERFUL photos all around, but I feel the feeling of the first one is ruined by the shoulder taking up the bottom left quarter of it.

On field action shots would probably fare better, as those areas are lit better than the areas you were shooting in.

For the areas you are shooting, I don't see a shutter speed of over 1/250th being necessary, even at 200mm. Your lens has IS, does it not?
