I don't know how much of a competition it'd be if digital is allowed with film.

Well if everyone is running the same rules that I set out in the original thread and anyone running a DSLR turns off noise reduction I fail to see how that would make the competition balance in favor of one or the other format. I may consider splitting this into 2 divisions film and digital both running the same settings. Let me sleep on this. Since I'm putting up a prize I have to make it fair.

Hey guys I have thought about it and I'm going to run 2 divisions. Film division can run any lens up to 800 ISO film and is allowed post processing for posting reasons. Other than that no PP please

Digital divison may run up to 800 ISO on camera any lens allowed any other settings are also allowed (ie custom white balance etc) with that said SOOC for the digitals as properly set up they need no PP just to get them up on the web in a usable format.

Anyone that wants in please post in this thread so I have a list of competitors and then I can set up a thread for everyone to post their best picture in and I'm going to make it one submission only and ask that edit privilideges for that thread not be available. Then after that's done have a poll by post number or user name in the thread and may the best submission in each division win.

Please post up whether you are in the film or digital division or if you would like to participate in both. I am considering putting up a Kata mini digital rucksack as a prize for each division. Specifically a DR-461 as I own one and they are like a little clown car of camera backpacks lol

Composites and heavy editing ARE old school. Dodging and burning are Darkroom concepts, and we had people screwing around and editing images back during the US Civil War.

If your goal is to create a work of art of some kind, and not capture an image for photo journalism, historical reference, or other reason that it should be 'as seen in person', then I say go at it. Use all the tools you have and can that will help you achieve the vision you have in your mind and wish to share with the world.

The only difference is that now you can do it safely in your own home for the price of an average computer, and you aren't really potentially risking your life or health fumbling around with chemicals in an expensive dark room setup with a pile of complex equipment to do all the simple little tricks you want.

If you want to have a photography competition without allowing much editing, then I say we all shoot test targets. Standardised targets for colour and focus, and the perosn who is judged the most mathematically correct wins!

I'm just trying to have a competition that's as simple as possible. With that said maybe I should open up the divisions ie film limited (800 ISO max, primes only, NO PP except to get the image online), digital limited (max of 800 ISO, primes only, modes (monochrome etc) allowed but no PP SOOC only) and then unlimited classes where it's run balls out.

What do you think of that?

so film and digital both limited by my rules and unlimited classes as well. I'll have to think of some other prizes then as I was going to put 2 kata bags but they are about $50 a pop and I'd rather not go over $100 total in prizes. Maybe I can wrangle some photo stuff up as prizes or possibly make the winners of each class get a year of membership on me.

How about if you use a DSLR, you have to limit your ISO to 100 or something, shutter speed can't exceed 1/250, and your aperture can do whatever or something like that?

that's what I was trying to go for in the original rules but people kept saying it was too restrictive. This idea is turning out to be a real PITA but I want to run it as I know it'll be a hit if I can come up with a rule set that everyone can live with. With that said Josh hit me up mcb chat later if you're on there and we can discuss. Perhaps I'll bring you in to co chair it if you're game

AKA Fan
I routinely shoot at an ISO of 100 and with a 50 1.4. And I think the most PP I've done lately was bump the exposure up a stop.

That's sort of my intent here CD. it's to have a common rule set and an old school style setup (or as close to old school as digital can get) and to try for a SOOC approach. I'm just trying to get everyone's input finalize a ruleset and then I have already looked into prizes I'm thinking a Kata DR461 camera rucksack for each division winner.
