the running joke at natty geo was there were more oncologists with high end pro gear, then pro shooters with high end gear.

I'd bet that's true. Most of the true professionals I know shoot with either Canon L lenses or the Nikon equivalent. I've yet to see any of the professionals I know use something that's anywhere near the cost of this monster. Most guys I know are shooting 70-200 2.8 IS, 50 1.2 85 1.2 etc. So nothing that's above say $3K

I couldn't afford all my nice gear if I was a Pro Photographer. That's been a large part of my decision process.

I've actually thought about getting a used 1D Mark III as an upgrade to my Rebel Xti. Same resolution but far faster burst speeds for sports and airshows. I've also been considering a 7D funny thing is a 7D seems to outpace a 1D Mark III in almost every respect but is less to buy even buying brand new 7D vs used 1D Mark III

Any thoughts on that frink?
Sorry, I've got nothing against Canon, but I shoot Nikon/Leica so I have no idea about those camera's at all. In general, sensor tech has advanced so much over the last 5 years it's hard to justify the old bodies. Everyone I know who has a 7D loves it.

I hear ya on the pro photog bit. A friend of mine is a pro wedding photographer and told me straight up that as it sits now there's very little money to be made as everyone has decent DSLR's and such and lots of people think they can shoot just as well so he said a lot of couples are passing on a pro photog because there will be X number of people with "pro cameras" at the wedding or event. With that said he also told me the events he does get booked to are huge and he can't be everywhere at once so I'm actually going to be a paid wedding photographer in the summer (I'll mainly be doing the shots of the receptions so the first dance and such are important) so that's my main upgrade motivation. I figure I'll upgrade a few lenses too. Looking right now at the 70-200 F4L for a telephoto, the 50mm 1.4 and 85 1.8 for more loosely framed portrait stuff and then grabbing a 135 2.8 soft focus for the dreamy shots. So now that I've got the lens lineup decided I'm simply looking at what body to stick them all on.

Hell that would make a nice bird lens.... About the only real application I could think of for this lens. Expensive bird pictures.

In 4 years of doing photography I've never thought once I ever needed a lens longer than 400 mm, let alone 600 or the ungodly 1200 mm.
