Nikon announces 800mm 5.6

And it's only $18K!!
AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR

Start saving your pennies! Supposed to be out in April which in Nikon time means October.

It's a goof. No one will actually buy these at retail...this is something Nikon will keep in the catalog at retail for "bragging rights". Similar to the unobtainable 13mm 5.6. I would expect that in reality, Nikon will rent or hand these out to NPS pros at major events just to try to look fancier than Canon.

Since Canon's equivalent is half this price, it's kind of amusing that you can go buy Canon's lens, plus a pro Canon body, and leave it on the lens for the price of the Nikon...

I just cannot believe that yet another Nikon FX zoom was announced this week and no love (still) for DX.

Wait until Canon updates their 800mm, then it will be more than the Nikon version.

People will buy these. Not many, but it's not a high volume seller by nature.

At the end of the day Nikon/Canon must know that the lenses they have in their lineup that are sometimes $10 000+ are baiscally just a HEY WE DID IT! type of thing. I'd bet that they don't sell a damn one since realistically who would have a need for an 800mm lens even for sports shooting or wildlife it just seems insane

I've seen Canon 800mm 5.6's in the wild. Guy at an airshow had 400mm 2.8, 600mm f4 and 800 5.6, all with 1D bodies attached.

I think you guys are severly underestimating the amount some people spend on gear.

Mother of god that's an insane amount of cash to have tied up. Frankly unless I was a highly paid pro photog I wouldn't drop that kind of cash even if I had it to spend. I've actually thought about getting a used 1D Mark III as an upgrade to my Rebel Xti. Same resolution but far faster burst speeds for sports and airshows. I've also been considering a 7D funny thing is a 7D seems to outpace a 1D Mark III in almost every respect but is less to buy even buying brand new 7D vs used 1D Mark III

Any thoughts on that frink?

Then chances are good that you're not anywhere close to their target market.

Mind you, I know one photographer here who brings a $6k lens along with his new 1Dx (Plus other lenses) out to roller derby games. Like myself he is into photography for the fun of it, and doesn't make it his day job.

So, who drops that kind of cash on this sort of lens? Those of us with the means and desire to own and use such a thing.

Personally I would love an 800mm prime. I could see myself owning Canon's version in the next ten years. For now my next goal is a Sigma 120-300mm 2.8.

I guess I look at it as it's cool to have a lens that long and that relatively fast but I would find personally my applications for it would be so limited in what I shoot. If I really wanted a lens like that I could get one no issues there on the finance front it just seems a little crazy. With that said I'm a paid photog on weekends but it's not my day job and the subject mattery I'm paid to shoot I'm also passionate about (vintage warbirds) so I got into a lens setup that is the best for that particular application well that and sports as I scored a gig to be an action photog for our local OHL team.
