Curious. Who uses filters when they shoot paintball? I am going to be using my 70-200 f2.8 next time I shoot and I'll be running a UV filter on the lens.

Just curious, who uses filters to shoot paintball? Obviously filters are cheaper than lenses, by far.

I personally run a UV filter but with that said I have a cheap as hell Canon 10D I picked up just for shooting paintball (got it for $80 locally) Basically I wouldn't risk a 7D if you're getting really close to the action. If the filter takes a hit odds are the paint is going to leak into the threads and then from there well you get the idea. Unless you're going to be running back to the staging area to clean spray off all the time I'd say don't bother trying to get right in there. Most times I find I can get great shots by simply standing on top of the bleachers near the airball field and shooting down using my 70-210. Given it's bright and sunny I usually shoot at F8 at iso 200 or sometimes 400 to keep the shutter speed up and then camera into machine gun mode and off I go.

one issues is if you use cheap filters and the paintball breaks the filter you might get some pretty nasty scratches on your lens.

My 7D has seen the field plenty of times, and it's been hit a few times. A kid at LL5 autotriggered the nuts out of it and it help up fine. The thing is a tank.

Lenses are just a little more concerning. And expensive.

another option if you have your heart set on shooting your 7D might be to buy a cheaper lens just for shooting paintball with. That way if it does take a hit you won't be out as much cash. Actually with that said I thought you had a 55-250? They are a cheap enough lens used that if they took a hit they are cheap to replace. I know if I'm getting in close to the action I bring my 10D and run a nice but cheap MF adapted M42 Carl Zeiss 55mm 2.8 lens. takes pics just fine and if it were to take a hit and the entire thing was a writeoff I'd only be out about $130 for the entire thing.

i was thinking of picking up a 20D locally for paintball.....but then my wife made me my camera shield - As for the lens - Just be cautious, wear a hunting vest and paint a cheap mask yellow so people know your shooting photos

I use a not so cheap ($70) filter almost all the time with my 17-40, but so far I have only shot PB with a 50mm (1.8) so I wasn't too worried about it.

What filters do:

That was WC 2011. Replacing the scratched front element cost $200.

Use filters to protect against frequent cleaning, or don't use them at all.

Josh.
The bigger question is who actually owns that piece of glass. If it belongs to the university, it isn't worth risking your job over it.
