Actually having shot marching band stuff I used my tamron 10-24 and my 70-200. The 70-200 gets great closeup shots.

I actually felt that shooting at 10mm was too wide if youre on the sidelines. You get. A lot of the field in front and te subject kindof gets lost in the image. Being up in the stands shooting wide is really cool because you can get the whole formation from where its supposed to be seen and the rest of the stadium.

Just some food for thought.

If you can get on the field pretty close to the subject the wide lens would be more effective.
