Lens suggestion help

Okay, I have a Canon 50d, love it, but am looking for some new glass.

I have a 28mm-135mm currently. What is the next lens you would suggest? I mainly take shots of marching bands at competitions and of landscapes.

if you're doing stuff like that (presuming you want to get the whole formation in one shot) and doing landscapes I'd say maybe a 16-35 or a 14mm Samyang 2.8. Part of how to answer the question properly is that we need to know your budget for new glass. I have the same body btw and if you install Magic Lantern it opens up all sorts of neat things.

What do you find lacking in your setup? What can you not do with your current lens and camera? How often do you tell yourself "I could have done x, but my current gear doesn't give me y"?

Budget is $300-400. I wish I could get 'more' in one shot.

so you need a wider lens..

marching bands, so that means low lighting or stadium lighting?

how close are you usually?
like on the side lines or in the stands?

Sigma 10-20 F4/5.6 is a nice lens. It is @ 429.00 Brand new

I say this because you said you want more in the shot - I also have the 28-135 and the 10-20 is crazy wide to gather more into a shot. Also with that combo you have a good range of 10-20 / 28-135mm coverage only missing 8mm between.

on a crop its the equivalent of a 16-35mm

Well yea there is the "crop factor" but you still on a 50D get the same as a 7D.

So you get "16-35" and then "45-216" if you do the 1.6 factor......ok ok ok Blake you miss out on 10mm not 8mm and you have coverage from 2 lenses from 16-216

17-40. It's a little out of your suggested budget, but very much worth it. I've rented it's number of times after ditching an old Canon 17-35 2.8L and 16-35 2.8L V1. The 17-40 was glued to my body while at the Grand Canyon, it's been used at several weddings I shot, and I use it frequently for environmental landscape shots at work.
