For a long time I used standard lamps with tracing paper over them to act as a diffuser, which you will want. Direct light is very harsh and unflattering. You can pick up a bunch of stuff to make a small "studio" from Hobby Lobby. A couple pieces of foam core for the back and bottom, a roll of seemless paper for the background and a couple of lamps with color matched bulbs (basic CFL bulbs from Lowes) will get you there. However, with that 600EX, you can use it as a strobe off camera.

I've been using my Canon 24-105L, but I want something a little better, not sure what, maybe the 85mm prime.

Really I just need more space haha.
