I agree, it's a convenience to have that type of service, and that is what you are paying for- hassle free repair and replacement. It's like car insurance.

Yea if it covers gravity then it's worth it to ya... Mack warantees are somewhat disappointing... thats what my boss asks me to push at the shop. They merely extend the manufactures waranty. If you get a lemon chances are it will show its hand within the first year, and then you're covered from the manufacturer. My thought is if you screw your camera over two years down the road you'll get a replacement that is obsolete so you might have been better off just skipping the waranty and putting the extra dough towards a flash or lens etc... but then again my camera bag weighs about 50lbs I guess that makes me a little bit nuts about gear. I'm about to get a lighting setup... I'm thinkin I'll go with an Alien Bees setup and maybe their ringlite

Shag, the RT is amazing. I got it up and running with no trouble... needed a level-x oring. The puppy sings with the 4.5k flatline I have on it. Still rockin the single trigg, I've got some sweet wood grips on her. I'll pm you a vid of it ripping in the back yard via 1200psi input of AGD Flatline goodness. Can't thank you enough for that sweet deal. Probably one of my favorite guns in the collection. I always bring it out to the field in the event of rain, or when someones e-spyder goes down I just hand em it. There's not much you can do to hurt that gun. Kids just don't get it sometimes... I've dunked it in water aired up just to prove a point before.

Back on topic, our prices at the shop were just dropped. Announced as of today I think. My boss was working on it most of the day, changing tags. We didn't update Canon yet but off the top of my head the Nikon stuff dropped about $100 on average... The D40x is out as far as I know. We won't be getting anymore but they're in the current catalog (selling of remaining stock I'm sure). D60's will list at $630 for the body only. We're gonna sell em at $615.

The new 16-85 F3.5-5.6 VR lens by Nikon sounds like a good one but it will not be offered in a kit. D40's will stay in the line, they didn't drop down as much on the price. D80's dropped significantly. I like the D80 myself for a starter. Has the vari modes and won't limit your options. The D60 has the same cheapish shutter unit as the D40. Neither have CLS built in (wireless flash system). If you are going Nikon I'd say the D80 with the 18-135 is the best starting point for the money. Avoid the 18-55 lens if at all possible. It's a paper weight to me.

CC is the pits. As with most box stores the employees can tell you how much stuff costs, and can read the info tag for you if you don't feel like doing it yourself. Occasionally you find someone who knows their stuff but it's not very common. If you want good prices: B&H Photo Video. Best online store for photo and the only one I'll buy from besides direct dealers like ALien Bees etc. No joke sometimes B&H will price their stuff $5-10 above what my store's wholesale cost is. If I don't buy through my work I buy B&H.

Hi,

Quick update.

I wound up going with the Canon S5 IS. I reiterate that Circuit City sucks. They would not price match the S5 IS with the store I wound up buying from. The sales guy gave an attitude that the store would not even price match itself on the web site never less price match someone else. He came back sayingthe price match policy is only for best buy. WTF? The store was $399 the web site was $345. They wonder why they are hurting. They were good enough for playing around the camera.

So in my travels, I wound up going to Unique Photo's warehouse. They had just moved and were in the process of setting up shop in the new building. Their store are was not even competed yet. The guy behind the counter said it was going to be awhile before the retail front will be ready. The place is going to huge around 30 by 60 I would have to say. They had some of the display cases and gondolas in the showroom area.

Final wind up was I got 2 cameras. Why? Well in my search for the one for myself, my mother called me about her camera. Now mind you she had my old digital camera from 1998. It uses a serial cable to interface with the PC. She asked me where does the USB cable for the camera plug in! At that point, I mulled over changing my parents anniversary gift from tickets to a hockey to a P&S camera that was modern. I found the A570 IS from Canon a good choice. It seemed to have enough features but still simple enough for them to use it on their grand daughter. Mind you their anniversary they got a grandchild. I joked and said it was their gift for the next few years. We all had a good laugh. The camera worked out to be much cheaper than a planned limo ride to game and really nice tickets.

I got the S5 IS for myself. I got an A570 IS for my parents as anniversary gift. My wife and I were still thinking about getting them Devil tickets as well. Just not the really good seats. They would only enjoy the cheap seats more. That is how my folks are. Besides they have been helping my wife and I out with child care. I cannot wait to see my mom get a picture of my dad and my baby girl together tomorrow.

As for the total prices. I did not do bad at all. $327 for the S5 $155 for the A570. $30 for 2 SD 2 GB cards plus tax. No discounts that was the prices on the web site. They are literally right on par with B&H. For those interested in checking out their web site, Unique Photo, Inc. Cameras, Film, Digital, Video and More ... for less!. Just a word of advice, call the 973 number, the 800 number is FUBARed. I was talking to the lady on the phone and they were aware of the problem. She said they were still getting things settled from the move that just happened. She apologized as well as mentioned the fact they do a lot of business on the net. Therefore, it was even more important to make sure the web site as well as the phones are working correctly.

I figure I would get something that will handle glass some day. For right now, the S5 looks like a good fit for me.

later,
shaggy

Thats not a bad deal, and those Cannon A series P&S's are pretty tough and easy to use cameras. Good choice!

Hi,

Another update...

My parents braved the "nice" weather that mother danger dumped on us in NJ. We have about 7 inches of fluffy white stuff on the ground. When they came to the door it was quite the surprise. I got up out of bed and greeted them.

After waking up a bit I went into the closet and got the camera and accessories. I left it in the shopping bag that has "photo" written on it all over the place. I gave them the bag and my mom opened it and had a huge smile on her face! My dad was hummm a new gadget. Mom was in a rush to use it. I got the camera set up quickly. I showed them some basic functions and off they went. When they started asking me questions, I just said you got a manual now, read it. There was a good laugh to be had.

As for the camera itself, the A 570 seems to be top notch. It has a number of features that are similar to my S5. My parents were able to use it within the first few minutes. That is the good point. Ease of use. The image stabilizer is good as well if they were shaking a bit. So less blurry pictures.

Next item on the list is to get a web site together and post some photos so the rest of the family can see her. Everyone is asking. Everyone is down on the fact I have not been able to get some pictures together yet.

later,
shaggy

Picassa is great software, and has free online storage, and more can be purchased.

Nice picks SHAG! In addition to a Nikon D50, we have a Canon A520 that we take with us when we just need something small and light. It does really well outdoors in lots of light. Here's a pic I took with the A520:

Shag,

It's Jim Krupnick.... good call on the S5, great point and shoot option. Just like the poster above me I have a D50 and a D80 body but I also have a P&S that I take with me when the SLR isn't practical. Mine happens to be an Olympus but it's similar in features to the S5IS

Anyone that tells you point and shoots can't take a good pic is out of thier mind.

Oh and you might want to keep Welcome to Abes of Maine in mind too, I bought my last lens and my speedlight from them. Good prices and you can go right down to Edison NJ to pick things up.

Hey,

hi Jim... I will keep them in mind as well. I know Unique Photo was not to hard to get to. How have you been? I have not seen you since my UPS gig and you live literally right around the corner from me. No I do not live in the apartments. I live in a house in which the apartments are right behind me. Oh yeah how is the baby? I know when I was delivering to the apartments your wife(?) said she was due in January if memory serves me correct. We just had our first 2 weeks ago. I have a daughter.

I am thinking about getting another Canon when the time comes when I can afford another one. I like the S5 so far and I really was able to pick it right up and use it. The features are pretty strong. The time from picture to picture is amazing. My P&S Cybershot was pretty good for the processing time. However, this thing feels like a rocket ship. About the only thing I could complain about is the fact it took me a few to figure out the controls. My wife wanted to the use the camera and I made her do the same thing I did. Learn them. Now she can use the camera in auto. I figure when she gets some time (lol) I will walk her through more of the camera. However, auto mode is fine for her.

So now I have to get that job. I have to call my friend to find out what is happening with everything.

later,
shaggy

Baby's good I actually just picked up a speedlight from Abe's this week and rented a fisheye, I want some good macro feet shots of him to hang in my office at work people already thing I'm wierd so why the hell not!

That's another thing you really want to think about when stepping up to the SLR world, renting lenses....all the rental places I have seen and used carry Nikon and Canon mounts only. Like the fisheye I rented, it's almost $600 if I were to buy it but costs me $50 to rent it for a week.....I probably rent it once or twice a year so buying it doesn't make sense. Pentax, Olympus and others all make great SLR's too but there are very few rental options for those guys...
