This game is "FUN". Everyone should see how "FUN" this game is. Thanks to this game I have learned the following: -MAGMA is like fantasy duct tape -CARP will KILL YOU WITH ZERO WARNING -Tetrahedrite is an ore of copper and silver -You can sleep a sucking chest wound off and be fine -Skeletal Carp can WALK ON LAND -If your family dies to goblins, you can get over it by standing near a REALLY GOOD TABLE -CATS are DELICIOUS -To FEAR the & -To FEAR the E -The BEST KIND OF MEAL is made up ENTIRELY of minced wine. Who else is privy to the "FUN"? |

I've got a couple of fortresses in my past and have to say that DF puts the "fun" in "global thermonuclear war" - everyone who plays is going to have fun with it, but in the end, everyone dies. I cheat though, and I've always used the Mayday combined pack so I don't have to translate from ASCII. I'm lazy like that.

I was beginning to think that I was the only one here. I've gotten used to the ASCII, but I did use reveal.exe right at the start once to find a magma pool so I guess I'm just as bad. Though there were over 170 zombie carp and hippoes on embark on that fort... |

Thanks for reminding me of this game. I tried getting into if a few months ago but it just confused the hell out of me. I'm going to be trying it again with a guide so I can find out what I need to do

LoopyDood - This is an excellent tutorial series, and it will help out a lot. As are the videos from Captain Duck on YouTube. Lenin - *ouch* That's a lot of zombie carp. Kinda sounds like that one legacy/bloodline game... can't remember the name of it, but the Fortress was located in some frozen, blasted wasteland, infested by skeletal elk and dragons. The leader of the fortress is such a billy bad-a** that he kills at least one dragon by wrestling it to death all by his lonesome.

So I built up my first fortress. It was doing pretty well until a sudden onslaught of migrants wiped out my food supplies. Soon, my population had been reduced to around ten due to starvation, insanity and a goblin siege. I abandoned the fort. I then went back to reclaim it with about 100 dwarfs. When they all got inside I flooded the floor above them with magma.

Nist Akath! I love making forts in the extreme cold. My only fortress to reach a pop of 200 had a lot of infants die to frostbite. It was also sieged every single year without fail, but I had gotten extremely lucky and had a pair of artifact swords made. Aquifers in freezing biomes save your ***. The fort I am working on right now has flux and magma. It took me 10 game years to hook the magma up to and increasingly large number of mistakes on my part. > Mortality here is also kind of high, but the hypertombarium should be complete soon.

Ah Nist Akath, good story. I'm well past cheating and into modding reactions and plants. I've spent more time working on mods than playing lately. Are you building a variation on the Hellfurnace? |

Actually, I abandoned soon after I got the magma working. I just wasn't feeling the mojo. This fort has some potential though, I was randomly panning around the world map and found a magma pipe far far away from any volcano. On a sinister glacier with double aquifer. And then I hit magnetite on the way down. And the first dwarven caravan just showed up and was run down by skelks. |
