| The Brown Guy! | HTML forum? So, I am a website administrator now.. cool, eh?! Well, anyway, I was wondering if anyone (Carter...?) has any forum codes in HTML. See, I am limited to my abilities right now, and would like to put up a very simple message board/'forum'. Any help would be appreciated.

| Very little is done in html, it offers the layouts and stuff, but the background work, such as saving posts and whatnot, is done by a server-side script. PHP and Perl/CGI are the most common languages for doing the background stuff, and databases such as MySQL are the most common place to save info (isntead of just a text file). Your host should give you AT LEAST perl, usually PHP and mysql. I can give you a copy of invision powerboard 1.3, the last free version, if you like. Besides that, SimpleMachines Forum and PHPBB are two commonly used free options If you only have perl access, or you don't have a database on your host, there are forums that work just on text and perl or text and php, with no databases needed... You'll have to look for yourself though, I haven't used any of those except for some curious poking a few years ago

| The Brown Guy! | Too late. I found one. It is hosted by proboards and just works as a link from my page. www.trmontana.proboards57.com

| Off site forums don't usually allow you to have full control of your forum, and you can't back them up for if you want to move to your own server. If you like, I can host a forum for you on threehundredfps.com, and I'll let you move it off if you ever like. No charge, no pressure, just an offer

| The Brown Guy! | Hmm, I may take you up on that offer... Would I have full administrative powers? This one does allow me to control A LOT of content.

| Yeah, you'd be a full admin, install mods, a shop, change or rewrite your own themes, and I'll get you an FTP account. Of course I will remain an admin, but I will remain hands off unless something goes wrong, or you ask for some help. If you want to check it out, email me your forum choice (I have IPB 1.3, as I said), your requested url (threehundredfps.com/XXX) and (xxx.threehundredfps.com), a ftp username and password and I will get started. It's my 21st birthday, and I am getting ready to go out, so it may not come together completely until tomorrow

| At work, we use VBscript for the backend, but the front end is all transparent, so it doesnt really matter. You still have to know how the html works since it ends up being an interface protocol for the back and front ends. Still, it takes time to setup a good forum. I meant to throw one on my server a long time ago, but never had the time, and ended up using the free "Network54" forums. nick |
