For the most part the Acer Aspire 3000 that I got last year has been doing it's job... it's a little quirky sometimes at start up and I have to power it down with the 6 count on the power button. The other problem that I just noticed is that the "hinges" for the screen are starting to crack... not good. And I don't abuse this at all... I'm very careful with it.

I'm probably going to replace this with a tower shortly, mainly because I don't want the screen falling off one day during use.

Yeah, that's the weakest point on a notebook. One of the reason's I really like my thinkpad is it's the only notebook I've had where the hinges are metal instead of plastic. We've had a bunch of Toshiba's go at work where the only problem with them is the dam plastic hinge

Thanks guys. I think I am going to go ahead and buy it. It isn't going to be my main computer so it seems like a decent choice.
What is woot? Is it some sort of list of deals on the net like apex?

Acer must be good, as Dell contracts Acer to design and manufacture some of their laptops.

In reality, there are only about 8 true Original Design Manufacturers (ODM's sells to OEM's) of notebooks in the world... Even Sony (ick) and Apple Inc relies on outsiders to make their notebooks in one way or another (if you are bored --> http://www.gen-x-pc.com/laptopmanu.htm )

here ir a real OEM manufacturer and who they supply to found this very intresting if you find the right retailer you can get a killer notebook that will save quite a good sume over the resellers (dell, gateway, alienware, voodo)

sagers seem to be the next best to the OEM lable
