Are Acer computers any good?

I have a chance to buy an Acer Aspire laptop for a pretty good price but was wondering how Acer is. I never realy heard of them until the last year or so.
Anyone have any info on them?
Looking at a Dual Core Pentium 1.6GHz, 80GB HD, Dual Layer DVD Burner, 14.1-Inch Widescreen Display, with Microsoft Vista Home Basic and Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 950 built-in to deliver brilliant pictures and video...802.11b/g wireless. $600.
Is this a worth while deal?

Thanks

How much RAM? I'm assuming 1gb. I wouldn't be thrilled about Vista, but if you have a gig of ram and starting a new lappy, its fine. I trust ACER - they make good components. I have heard good things about the lappy's too. Sounds like a good deal if you aren't looking for a very powerful lappy.

NOTE: Without 1gb of ram, you are going to want to kill Microsoft for making such a heavy OS.

I think it's 512 but with the price of ram these days an upgrade to 1g is easy enough.
I don't need it for much just surfing and maybe moving my music collection from my desktop to the laptop. Just can never get the GF off my desktop.

For surfing and music, it will be more than fine.

find out if its one 512 stick, or two 256 sticks... it would suck to have to go out and buy a gig of ram and throw out 512 in the process, i know Dell loves to pull that trick. in some cases buying all new ram might be cheaper than the factory upgrade. i've had a few acers and never any issues.

I've got an Acer Aspire 3000 hooked up to my stereo. I mainly use it for navigating my music collection (700+ albums ripped to an external drive) and to feed my projector. It's also nice to quickly check something online without having to go to the office or let guest on your main rig. But capability wise it's fine. Hardly anyone uses the full capacity of their computer these days because even a basic computer is so powerful. I could even do video editing on it if I wanted to, it would just take longer than on my main system.

As far as $600 being a good deal. It's certainly a pretty good deal. You might be able to save a bit more with a rebate or something but not enough to lose any sleep over. Even at 512mb ram you would be fine for basic office productivity and media use (or would be with XP), but like you said ram is so cheap these days. I mostly go thru newegg.com for my computer hardware needs, you might check them out.

I sell Acer when my clients don't want to throw down for a Thinkpad or an HP biz notebook. Good stuff, in general.
