Laptop locks

Friend of mine was looking into laptop locks, and wanted to buy a kensington lock, but I have seen those things picked five ways form sunday with no effort or time.

He basically wants something he can step away from his machine in lab and feel secure about it. Any suggestions?

I've been using a Kensington forever (it seems, anyway) - the kind with the barrel key - and never had a problem. Most cable locks are little more than a deterrent anyway, and many can be fairly easily broken or cut. Most of the laptop thefts around here are walk-by grabs, which is really the only thing that cable locks will effectively prevent. If there's a cable lock, or even a network or power cable connected, it'll take longer than a second or two and the thief just looks for an easier target (which, unfortunately, there are always plenty of on your typical college campus).

get something that emits a high piercing screech sound when it's removed. like a laptop car alarm. i'm amazed there's not something like that all over the place.

Yeah, what Chad said...locks only keep honest people honest. True about the "low hanging fruit" theory, in which they move on...but if it's a high-end or desireable model, consider it gone. There are Lo-jack type units for laptops now, however. I've seen them work pretty well with cars...might be interesting to see how they work with laptops. Here's a link:
